Many reports are now suggesting that Everton are plotting a move that would bring Manchester United winger Memphis Depay to Merseyside on a loan this January. The Holland international has largely been an audience for United this season and doesn’t look to have boss Mourinho’s confidence.
Ronald Koeman, Depay’s compatriot, wants to bring the 22-year-old to the club. Depay joined United in 2015 for £25million in a much hyped transfer of becoming one of their star forwards but could do very little.
Everton are looking to bring in more attacking options in the squad and Depay could be a deadly addition. If the former Southampton boss can bring out the best of Depay, the midfielder has the potential to take the club to dizzier heights. Besides, he will provide stiff competition to the likes of Kevin Mirallas and Gerard Deulofeu, who aren’t haven’t really impressed this season despite getting their fair share chances. Except for Yannick Bolasie and Ross Barkley, no one in the attacking midfield position has been very effective.
After being injured for the initial part of the season when Depay returned to the squad, he had expected to start in the League Cup and the Europa League but was left out. The versatile midfielder has not started even once for United in the league and has only seen 20 minutes of top-flight action so far this season.
It has also affected his international stint as he was given only the last 25 minutes to impress for Danny Blind’s side. The once hot property has had an appalling stint so far at Old Trafford. Whilst at PSV, he simply couldn’t stop scoring but the lack of consistent game time at United has hampered his progress as his game relies so much on confidence.
Depay is one of the complete attackers when at his best. He has the perfect blend of agility on the flanks and composure while dribbling past opponents. Whether its direct free-kicks, providing a defence-piercing pass or through balls, Depay can do it all and it is really unfortunate that such a talent has been reduced to a substitute in United.
United fans don’t want the Holland winger to join Everton and are sure he has more to offer. However, it might also be good decision to get things running on Depay’s front if looked from United’s perspective. They could get back the real Depay back after a season at Everton. United also have Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the bench, who is also a pretty talented attacking player.
