According to an exclusive interview conducted by Football Insider, former Aberdeen and Leeds United legend Noel Whelan has called for Rangers to offload their star striker Alfredo Morelos in the summer, by branding the Colombian forward ‘a big baby’.
Although the report suggests that plans to conduct talks with the player about a potential extension at the Ibrox have now been postponed, there’s no certainty regarding his immediate future. Whelan though, made his opinion crystal clear on the matter by stating ‘I would sell him’.
While the striker’s exploits have obviously attracted interest from some of the continent’s bigger clubs, his attitude and lack of discipline is something that any potential suitors will have to live with. Whelan said, “Take the money and go out there and buy two or three strikers that will do a job for Rangers. Get some better personnel in that front line than Morelos, someone who’s not a big baby you have to look after all the time.”
What Is Rangers’ Current Striking Situation?
The Ibrox club started the campaign in decent fashion thanks to the blistering form being displayed by the prodigious Colombian. Steven Gerrard boasts three recognised front-men in his side – Jermaine Defoe, Alfredo Morelos and the recently acquired Florian Kamberi. Jermaine Defoe is a striker that needs no introduction, thanks to his extended spell as a prolific goalscorer in the Premier League. The former England international though is now well past his prime and undoubtedly headed into the last legs of his long career.
Florian Kamberi arrived from fellow SPL club Hibernian in January but has unfortunately not had the opportunities yet to nail down a starting position at the Ibrox. Having played in nine fixtures across all competitions, the Albanian international managed just the one goal. However, his desire and the overall impact is there for everyone to see. Morelos was obviously the manager’s preferred choice for the striker’s role all through the season until the COVID-19 pandemic eventually brought the league campaign to a halt.
Why Rangers Cannot Afford To Sell Morelos In The Summer?
The 23-year-old Colombian international striker has been the Gers’ standout performer for two seasons running now. Despite all the baggage that the youngster tends to carry with him, it’s safe to say that they’re not going to find a striker like this again anytime soon. The goalscoring blip since the international break has been noticeable for the forward, but Morelos is still the best goalscorer in Rangers’ ranks. It’s reached a point where publications like Glasgow Live have begun preparing for the Colombian’s potential exit in the summer, and in turn looking for possible replacements.
With that said though, there’s no looking past the fact that the Colombian has been the Glasgow club’s driving force for a couple of seasons now, and allowing him to leave could turn out to be a blunder. The striker has scored 12 goals from 26 league appearances this season, while also picking up three assists along the way. Also, his scoring rate in the Europa League is phenomenal. Despite the confusion and commotion that the youngster creates, it must be conceded that he’s one of the deadliest strikers in the Premiership, and keeping him at the Ibrox should surely be one of Gerrard’s priorities for the summer.
