Rangers have struggled to get going after the winter break but one bright spot in the last three months has been the emergence of Ianis Hagi. Signed on loan from Belgian outfit Genk, Hagi has managed to catch the eye with his brilliant displays.
The attacking midfielder produced a masterclass against Braga in the first leg at Ibrox which saw the Gers win 3-2 after being 2-0 down. Hagi has often managed to create that moment of magic when the chips have been down. However, even his efforts have not stopped Rangers from slipping 13 points behind Celtic in the title race. Nevertheless, on a personal level, Hagi has done well at Ibrox in a short time.
Goian believes Rangers will sign Hagi
Former Rangers and Romanian defender Dorin Goian believe that Gerrard will sign Hagi despite the 21-year-old attracting interest from some top clubs. Goian recently said (Daily Record), ”I’m really happy for Ianis and I glad he’s easily adapted to playing for Rangers. Rangers needed a player like Ianis.
“I know Rangers and their financial potential very well. I can tell you if they are satisfied with him – and I think they are – it certainly won’t be a problem for them to pay the money to Genk to sign Ianis.’
”Ianis loves Rangers and playing at Ibrox. If he trusts his own talent and his potential, he will win the heart of the Rangers supporters, which is not easy. It all depends on him which path he takes, but I am sure it will be at Rangers.”
Why it’s a no brainer for Gerrard?
The Glaswegian giants reportedly have the option to buy Hagi for £4.5m. Given his age and the form which he has shown, this would certainly look like a bargain deal. Gerrard had demonstrated in the summer of 2019 that he would be willing to go all out for the right players. The club decided to spend big on Ryan Kent in the summer by signing him for £7m. However, it’s a whole another thing that Kent has failed to meet expectations this campaign.
Gerrard should definitely look to go all out to sign the 10-time Romanian international as he can change games. Hagi always seems to drive the ball forward, and he has that moment of magic where he can produce a spectacular pass or a brilliant strike from range which is often necessary to break down teams that play in a low block.
With Gerrard playing with two attacking midfielders behind the central striker, Hagi will be perfectly suited to fit in that system. With Rangers holding all the cards for the signing of Hagi, we expect him to complete the move in summer to Ibrox.
