Rangers had to jump into action in the last few hours of the January transfer window as Jermain Defoe went down with a significant injury. Alfredo Morelos had also missed games due to suspension, and it became necessary for Gerrard to bring in a new striker before the transfer window shut down.
The Gers were linked with quite a few strikers at that time, and they were able to get the deal done for Hibernian’s forward Florian Kamberi. The 25-year-old hasn’t had many starts, but he has been used as an impact substitute by the manager. The striker has impressed with his energy, pace and directness whenever he has come on the pitch. Kamberi scored one and assisted one in the tie against St. Johnstone last month.
Kamberi wants Ibrox stay
The striker has now gone on to reveal that he would love to stay at Ibrox for the long term. Kamberi talked to Blick and said, “Rangers are an incredible club. Everything there is the finest there could be. The infrastructure is outstanding, and the staff are great.
“When I moved to Scotland two years ago, my second game was against Rangers, and since then, I have dreamed of playing for them myself. I really want to stay here long term. Playing in front of 50,000 fans every other week is just awesome.”
It’s clear that Kamberi has his heart set about a permanent move to Rangers. It remains to be seen though whether Gerrard would take that step or not.
Should Gerrard sign Kamberi permanently?
As mentioned, Kamberi has impressed with his energy and direct approach as he has always looked to take defenders on whenever he gets on the ball. Rangers have been guilty of being too passive against sides that look to sit back and defend. Hence, in games of those nature, it becomes necessary for individual players to stand up and make themselves count by taking that extra bit of risk on the ball.
Kamberi seems to have those qualities. The Lachen born forward also got a chance to start in the second leg of the Europa League tie against Braga. The 25-year-old seemed too eager to make an impact, and he was getting caught offside numerous times. The striker will need to bring some composure to his game, but overall we think that he has shown positive signs. Hence, we believe that Gerrard should consider getting him on a permanent deal for the right price.
