According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Premier League giants Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have both been offered the chance to sign Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic this summer, on the back of a row he had with the club involving the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire Real Madrid squad has been placed in self-isolation after a member of the Madrid basketball team tested positive for the virus, but Jovic’s recent actions have angered two of the parties involved in the incident.
The report suggests that Real Madrid are quite cross with their player because he left self-isolation to travel to his home nation of Serbia. Even though the European country already has strict laws in place to restrict the spreading of this deadly virus, Jovic proceeded to catch a flight out from Madrid sometime last week.
This has earned him quite a bit of stick from both his club and country, with the attacker even being forced to apologise for his actions.
What Makes Luka Jovic An Attractive Prospect For Chelsea?
The Serbian international striker was signed by Real Madrid from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, the same side who were beaten by the Blues in last season’s Europa League semifinal. While playing for the German club, the striker picked up a fairly stellar scoring record which read 36 goals from 75 appearances, which included strikes against the London side in both legs of the aforementioned European semifinal.
The former Red Star Belgrade man has been touted for great things for a few years now, and it’s safe to say that he’s one of the deadliest young strikers in European football on his day. Adept at timing his runs in behind, thereby leaving the covering defender for dead, the youngster boasts excellent pace for a man who likes to act as the focal point of the team in attack. Standing at over 1.82m tall, the Serbian is just as strong physically as he is mentally.
Why Chelsea Must Look To Beat Spurs To Jovic Signature?
The Blues’ striking problems have been no secret, and this summer could prove to be a turning point for Frank Lampard’s side. The unfortunate mid-season injury to Tammy Abraham couldn’t have come at a worse time for the London club, who were forced to call upon the services of veteran French striker Olivier Giroud after he was initially frozen out of the side for an extended period. Most importantly, their other striking option in Michy Batshuayi has proven along the course of the campaign that he doesn’t have the quality to perform at a massive club like Chelsea.
Luka Jovic’s exploits in a Real Madrid shirt so far have been extremely limited, and that’s exactly why this summer could be the best time for any suitors to lure him away potentially. With just two goals from 15 appearances in the La Liga this season, and that too with most of them coming off the bench, the Serbian has clearly struggled for playing time. Add in the current self-isolation debacle as well, and Chelsea could be presented with the ideal opportunity to secure the youngster’s services.
