West Ham United are the latest club whose ambitious plans have gone for a toss. This season was supposed to be a ground-breaking one in their history. The new stadium was set, Europa qualification was a step away and a world-class player in their squad was complemented by more than decent players. But even the best laid out plans go to waste if the execution is not right.
While the board can be held responsible for a botched up transfer window, the subsequent injuries to important players were pure wretched luck. With the Hammers now in the 17th position and facing the prospect of a relegation dogfight, they have a last chance to turn things around in the January transfer window and redeem themselves as far as the transfers are concerned.
SIGN A CENTRE-BACK AND A STRIKER
Most of West Ham’s documented problems have been regarding their striking options. But on a closer look, their back-line has been all over the place. They have conceded 20 goals which is better than only the bottom 3 clubs which explains West Ham’s position in the table.
A centre-back who can be an ideal partner of Winston Reid will give the team the base to start their improvement. And the need of a striker is apparent. While a permanent move should be put off till the summer, a loan deal with better scouting is the need of the hour.
KEEP HOLD OF DIMITRI PAYET
It was impressive that the Hammers could hold on to him this summer with his stellar performance throughout the season including the Euros. But he won’t be blamed if he seeks a move now with the player being at the peak of his career. He has already started giving hints that his future could lie elsewhere. But they need to keep him at the club for at least this season.
His ability to conjure a goal single-handedly is something that a struggling team like West Ham will desperately need. He has to show leadership on the pitch and rally his teammates. Lose Payet, better be ready for a relegation scrap.
PERSIST WITH PAYET, LANZINI, ANTONIO AND AYEW IN A FRONT FOUR
While the January transfer window will offer them a chance to strengthen if they wish to, a game plan is to be chalked out persisted with. Payet is most effective out on the left and should be played there.
Lanzini in a No.10 role and Antonio’s physique and raw pace out on the right. Ayew has to be given a fair chance in the striker’s role and with a bit of luck, there is no reason why they won’t click.
