In a recent interview (via The Daily Mirror), Red Bull Leipzig attacker Timo Werner has disclosed that he is still not sure about his next destination as he said, “At this time in professional soccer there are two different variations.
“The first is to be part of a team like Liverpool or Manchester City.
“They have a good working team. The teams have also great coaches.
“But this is the question: do you want to go to that kind of team, because the situation is already that hard for each member and you want to be a part of it? That’s one point you have to look at.
“The other side are teams which need some big changes, because they just won a few big titles, but they are not able to compete on the highest level anymore.
“For me, Manchester United is one of these teams.”
The German striker also went on to add (via The Daily Mirror), “So at this point of my career I’m asking myself: do I want to be part of a new team, to build up something new, or do I want to stay at my team and make something great?”
Werner’s Spectacular Record At Leipzig So Far
Werner has been a consistent goal-getter for Leipzig over the past few seasons. He has scored 88 goals in 149 appearances for the German side among which 27 goals have come in this campaign. His majestic goal-scoring contributions have helped Leipzig keep in touch with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga title race, with just five points currently separating them from the top of the table.
The Stuttgart-born marksman has also secured 11 assists in 33 appearances for Julian Nagelsmann’s side this term on all fronts which goes to show that he can be a creative presence in the final third as well. Werner’s attacking contributions in German football has been nothing short of spectacular, and so the Citizens would do well to lure him to the Etihad Stadium in the summer.
The 23-year-old has averaged 3.8 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game in the German top-flight (stats via whoscored). Werner’s numbers have been quite impressive and highlight how much he has grown as a striker during his time at the Red Bull Arena.
What Will The German Forward Bring To The Etihad Stadium?
Werner is one of the quickest players in the Bundesliga. He can put his pace to good use when trying to beat his marker in a 1v1 foot race. He is also not shy of having a pop at goal after attempting nearly four shots in every 90 minutes of league football this season. The German striker reads the game well and can be a tricky man to guard when left alone in a 1v1 situation. He is generally a lethal presence in front of goal and doesn’t mind working hard for his side.
Why The Citizens Need To Recruit Werner This Summer
His prolific nature in the final third, coupled with his tireless work ethic, make him an attractive proposition for the Citizens to consider in the off-season. He is precisely the type of player who can flourish playing under a world-renowned manager like Pep Guardiola. With Sergio Aguero edging towards the twilight years of his football career and Gabriel Jesus failing to earn regular starts in the Premier League, Man City will do well to recruit a consistent goal-getter like Werner.
He is good enough to carry most of the goal-scoring workload up top and has all the skill set required to succeed as the central figure of Guardiola’s frontline. However, as long as Aguero is there at the Etihad, there are no guarantees that the German forward will be able to secure regular first-team football for the Citizens. Furthermore, Man City are facing a two-year ban from all UEFA competitions, which could be a massive turn-off for Werner.
Either way, Guardiola should still try his best to sign the talented forward as he might help the Citizens bridge the massive gap to Liverpool at the top of English football next season.
