According to Corriere dello Sport print edition, as cited by Sport Witness, Borna Barisic’s agent has made it clear that the fullback would be on the move in the summer. Rangers will reportedly have to think about his situation after the Croatian fullback signed a new contract not too long ago.
Barisic drew interest in the January transfer market as well. Napoli are said to be in the hunt for him, but their interest isn’t serious just yet. With the Euros coming up, Barisic will have another chance to impress at a big stage. A good showing there would undoubtedly bring him more attention and limelight, and we believe that Rangers might find it hard to retain him.
Barisic’s rise this season
Nevertheless, Gerrard should try everything in his means to keep hold of Barisic. The 27-year-old managed to rediscover himself this season after an underwhelming first year at Ibrox. His attacking threat, crosses and defensive work rate have stood out.
Croatia’s manager Zlatko Dalic has already claimed (Daily Record) that Barisic is his first choice fullback for the Euros. That is undoubtedly an achievement given that he was being benched by Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan last season and neither of the two were specialists in that position.
Why a move for Barisic seems possible?
Barisic has contributed with 14 assists in all competitions this season. He also takes set pieces for his side. The Croatian seems to be a proper modern-day fullback, and he can certainly play in some of the top leagues of the world. A good thing that Rangers did was they were able to extend his contract until 2024. That might not keep him at Ibrox until then, but that would atleast ensure that the Bears get the best price for their fullback in the transfer market.
With Rangers likely to end up trophyless, there might not be enough attraction for someone like Barisic to stay at Ibrox. He can play European competitions with a club like Napoli as well. The left-back has been one of the most consistent performers in the back four for Rangers this season. If Barisic departs then the team would undoubtedly need a significant overhaul, especially at the back.
We still believe Rangers and Co can eke out another year out of him. However, the fullback will be blameless if he decides to jump ship as he is 27 and he would probably like to experience playing in some of the top leagues. Serie A could be well suited for the Croatian defender. However, as things stand, the interest from Napoli isn’t too serious, but the Rangers faithful should be prepared for a scenario where their fullback might depart in the summer.
