It’s certain that Steven Gerrard won’t kick another ball in an LA Galaxy jersey. With his contract expiring on the 31st of December with the Major League Soccer giants, LA Galaxy’s loss to Colorado Rapids in the quarter-finals of MLS Cup playoffs could be the legend’s last ever game for the side. There were speculation that the former English captain will hang up his boots once his contract expires at StubHub Center. However, recent reports are suggesting otherwise.
The Scottish Daily Record are claiming that the Liverpool legend could get his very last taste of European football with Celtic interested in bringing the talismanic midfield powerhouse. The Hoops are now managed by former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and it is believed that the Northern Irishman is setting up for a reunion at Parkhead.
Well, Gerrard is now 36 and is not the same player anymore that he used to be in his prime. Once one of the best midfielders in the world, does not have the legs anymore but looking at the competition in Scottish Premiership, he could still be a great success. However, it is well known that Celtic are not as rich as most of the European clubs and it is a bit questionable if they could afford the wages of the former Liverpool skipper.
Central midfield is one of the weaker areas of the Celtic side right now. Skipper Scott Brown is playing out of his skin this campaign but the Hoops lack a quality midfielder alongside him. Nir Bitton used to be a key player at the Paradise before the arrival of Brendan Rodgers but his less adventurous style of play is not well-suited for Rodgers’ system.
Both Callum McGregor and Stuart Armstrong are wingers by trade and are being played as a number eight by Rodgers. Both have done a decent job but there is a big room for improvement. Gerrard, even at the dusk of his career, can be a first-team regular for the Bhoys with the quality he still has. At the same time, he could play the role of a mentor for younger players like Liam Henderson who can learn a lot from the Champions League winner.
However, there is a big question mark over Celtic’s capability of bringing the star midfielder at Celtic Park. It is unlikely that Celtic will have European football post-January. Without Champions League football, it is unlikely that Gerrard will move to the green half of Glasgow. But, if Rodgers manages to pull off this signing, it could possibly be the biggest ever transfer in Celtic’s history.
