Newcastle United played hosts to Burnley at St. James’ Park earlier today hoping to pick up all three points in front of their home supporters. Steve Bruce’s men made a dominant start to the match but couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities in the first half. Both sides cancelled each other out as they went into the half-time break with nothing to split them.
The Tyneside outfit enjoyed more of the ball in the second 45 minutes and created some decent chances to score. However, they were woeful with their finishing in the final third as the contest finished goalless with both teams sharing the spoils.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle player fared during the match versus the Clarets.
Newcastle United Players Rated In Scoreless Draw Vs Burnley
GK: Martin Dubravka – 7/10
The Magpies shot-stopper put in a strong performance after his early injury scare in the game. He was hardly tested during the 90 minutes and kept a comfortable clean sheet at home.
RB: Javier Manquillo – 6/10
The Spanish full-back was reliable in the first half but struggled to create anything meaningful going forward. He also got cautioned in the dying embers of the match for bringing down Ashley Westwood.
CB: Federico Fernandez – 7/10
He made a vital block to deny Jay Rodriguez early in the first 45 and had a comfortable game at the heart of the Newcastle defence.
CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 6.5/10
The English centre-back had to win his fair share of aerial duels as Burnley played a lot of long balls during the clash.
LB: Danny Rose – 5/10
Rose picked up a silly yellow card for his poor tackle before the half-time break. He almost gifted the Clarets a goal when his back pass was intercepted by Rodriguez who failed to hit the target.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 7/10
The ex-Liverpool playmaker was lively in midfield as he caused a lot of problems for the opposition with his creativity and goal attempts.
CM: Isaac Hayden – 6/10
He worked hard and put in a couple of decent tackles in midfield. However, he lacked invention with his passes unlike his midfield partner, Shelvey.
RM: Matt Ritchie – 7/10
The Magpies wide player missed a great chance to score early on and failed to test Nick Pope with his header from close range. However, he didn’t give up and kept threatening the opposition throughout the second half.
CAM: Miguel Almiron – 6.5/10
The South American sensation was a constant threat in the opposition half but lacked the end product in the final third.
LM: Joelinton – 5/10
The Brazilian talent worked hard to help out Rose in defence but found it challenging to make an impact going forward.
ST: Dwight Gayle – 7.5/10
Gayle kept himself busy and was always willing to get involved in the attacking third of the pitch. He kept the Burnley defenders on their toes via his clever turns and tireless running.
Substitutes:
LM: Allan Saint-Maximin – 5/10
He struggled to influence the game after coming on for the final 12 minutes of the match.
