Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur took a massive blow to their ambitions of progress in the Champions League, after suffering an unexpected 1-0 defeat to RB Leipzig at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs were put under a lot of pressure right from the opening minutes of the tie, but it wasn’t until the 58th minute that German star Timo Werner converted his spot-kick to open the scoring. Despite some late pressure, the Lilywhites were unable to turn the tie around, and will hence travel to Germany next month a goal down.
Tottenham Hotspur Players Rated In Narrow Defeat Vs RB Leipzig
Hugo Lloris – 7.5
The Frenchman was undoubtedly Spurs’ best player on the night, as he was singlehandedly responsible for limiting this dangerous Leipzig attack to just the one penalty goal by Werner.
Serge Aurier – 5.5
The Ivorian struggled to impact the tie defensively as he was getting constantly caught out of position due to the sheer Leipzig numbers. Couldn’t get forward effectively tonight either.
Toby Alderweireld – 5.5
The Belgian international veteran didn’t have the best of outings as the pace of players like Werner gave him a proper run-around. Didn’t look comfortable at any point.
Davinson Sanchez – 6
The young central defender has managed to keep Jan Vertonghen out of Jose Mourinho’s first-team, and with good reason. He was easily their best defender over the course of the ninety.
Ben Davies – 5
Despite showing positive signs in the first half, it was Davies’ tackle that led to the only goal of the fixture. Looks like a player who’s just returned from injury and needs more time to settle.
Harry Winks – 6
The midfielder was responsible for spreading the ball out from the middle of the park. Wasn’t able to efficiently perform his tasks due to the lack of passing options for Spurs.
Gedson Fernandes – 5.5
Worked hard off the ball and ran his socks off during portions of the tie. Wasn’t able to provide any of the required quality in the final third, and looks pretty far from the finished product.
Giovani Lo Celso – 5.5
The former La Liga star has begun to shine through for Spurs over recent weeks but fell back into mediocrity for this fixture. Came close with an attempted set-piece routine though.
Dele Alli – 5
The English midfield star had a couple of presentable opportunities to open the scoring for Spurs, but looked ordinary in front of the high-quality football that the away side were playing.
Steven Bergwijn – 4.5
The new signing that arrived from PSV had shown himself in a good light since joining during the January window. The Dutchman was a spectator for most of the fixture and offered next to nothing.
Lucas Moura – 4.5
The Brazilian speedster worked hard on and off the ball but wasn’t able to create anything meaningful in the final third. Needs to improve his finishing, as he missed a golden opportunity late on.
Substitutes
Tanguy Ndombele – 5.5
The midfielder played some neat passes in the middle of the park as he tried to carry Spurs back into the game after coming on.
Erik Lamela – 5.5
The winger showed great determination after coming on and did begin to act as the example that led the rest of the team in the right direction.
