Manchester United continued their excellent form against top-six clubs in the Premier League after registering a 2-0 win over Chelsea earlier this evening.
It was an entertaining affair with no shortage of drama, featuring Olivier Giroud and Kurt Zouma’s disallowed goals. Maguire found the back of the net in the 66th minute after Anthony Martial initially opened the scoring late in the first half.
Chelsea, meanwhile, lacked the sharpness going forward and failed to create enough clear cut opportunities to give them a chance against this United side.
Manchester United Players Rated In Win Vs Chelsea
David de Gea 6
A surprisingly quiet game for de Gea, who was fortunate enough with Chelsea’s inconsistencies in front of goal. The Blues managed only shot on target.
Eric Bailly 8.5
A heroic block to deny Mateo Kovacic from scoring Chelsea’s first goal in the second half. He impressed the onlookers with his defensive contributions. But, the Ivorian should improve on his overall passing.
Harry Maguire 8.5
By far the most active player on the pitch, Maguire was lucky to get away with a kick on Michy Batshuayi. As far as his performance is concerned, the English international dominated the Chelsea defenders with his physicality. His imposing presence at the back made it difficult for the opposition to create chances.
Maguire also showcased his aerial quality by capitalising on an excellent cross from Bruno Fernandes and scoring the second goal. A fantastic defensive display from the defender.
Luke Shaw 7.5
Shaw’s ability to read the game coupled with his essential clearances helped Manchester United retain their solidity at the back despite Chelsea’s offensive firepower.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7.5
A mixed performance from Wan-Bissaka, who looked surprisingly rusty in his defensive game. One could argue that he lacked a definite identity in that right wing-back role. Great cross to feed Martial, though.
Fred 7.5
Not an extraordinary display from the Brazilian. But, he offered adequate support to Nemanja Matic in midfield and showed up whenever it was needed, in the second line of press. His energy and willingness to close down ball-carriers were important indeed.
Nemanja Matic 8
Matic certainly needs to improve his overall technical quality if Manchester United are to evolve. But at the same time, the Serbian showcased his experience and physical prowess, helping Man United dominate the midfield.
Brandon Williams 7
Not the best of performances from the youngster, who, much like Wan-Bissaka, lacked a clear identity. He kept losing duels, which is a worrying sign for Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer.
Bruno Fernandes 8
Bruno is clearly starting to find his feet in England. Once again, the Portuguese sensation showed glimpses of his quality, most notably when he provided a sumptuous cross from a corner to find Maguire for the second goal. His deliveries from set-pieces were top notch.
Daniel James 6
Not the most eventful game for Daniel James. He lacked that directness in his game, and he could barely test the mettle of the Chelsea defenders with his pace.
Anthony Martial 7
The Frenchman once again struggled to impress the onlookers without having Marcus Rashford by his side. He often lacked composure even though he did score the all-important opener late in the first half. The goal was a matter of beauty though as the Frenchman did well to get his head to the ball first.
SUBSTITUTES
Andreas Pereira N/A
Replaced the ineffective James in the 80th minute and offered some urgency in the middle of the park.
Odion Ighalo N/A
The ex-Watford star had an excellent opportunity to score after initially coming on for Martial during added time.
Diogo Dalot N/A
A late replacement for the tiring Fernandes.
