According to a report from Birmingham Live, Kalvin Phillips is being linked with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Nuno Santo is still keeping tabs on the boyhood Leeds United fan and the West Midland club have been linked with him in the last few transfer windows.
Wolves’ impressive stint in the Premier League
It is no surprise to see Phillips attracting interest from top-flight clubs. Wolves have taken giant strides ever since their promotion to the Premier League. Nuno’s men can take on anyone on their day, and they are even in contention to get Champions League spot this season. They already made it to the Europa League last campaign, and they are now in the knockout stages of the competition.
Leeds United meanwhile have wobbled in the past two months, and their promotion hope hangs in the balance. The Yorkshire club’s hierarchy did well last summer to keep Phillips at Elland Road. The midfielder went on to sign a new contract which showcased that the English ace wants to stay at his boyhood club.
Leeds need to get promoted to have a chance of keeping Phillips
However, it cannot be ignored that if things don’t work out for the Whites in the next three months in terms of promotion, Phillips could be on his way out of the club. Leeds Live journalist Joe Mewis also suggested the same where he indicated that the midfielder would be ‘highly likely to go’ if the Whites fail to gain promotion for another season.
Given his qualities, many believe that Phillips is ready to play in the Premier League. The defensive midfielder has emerged as the mainstay in the middle for the Whites. Recently the midfielder put in an influential display against Brentford after serving his three-game suspension.
Leeds United’s plans for the following season is going to depend on what division they might play in. Even though Phillips is under contract at Leeds until 2024, we think that there is a very remote chance of him saying if the Whites fail to move up. Phillips cannot waste his best years in the Championship, and if he dreams of representing the Three Lions, then a move to the Premier League would be very tempting.
A club like Wolves can be perfect for him. Wolves are known for their intelligent switch of play and Phillips is very capable of that. The midfielder reads the game well, and he tends to be at the right place at the right time as a defensive midfielder. Phillips is currently 24, and he would love to play in the Premier League with the Whites which is why he signed a long term contract not too long ago. However, if the Whites fail to move up, then he could be sold, and that might even be the end of Marcelo Bielsa as well.
