In a recent interview with Catalunya Radio (via The Daily Star), renowned journalist Oriol Domenech shed some light on Kylian Mbappe’s future when he said, “From what they tell me from different clubs that have contacted him, Madrid has it closed.
“When Mbappe departs, in 2020 or 2021, he will go to Madrid.”
The French striker was the talk of the town in Paris recently after having a public bust-up with Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel which has put his long-term future at the French capital in doubt. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have reportedly been linked with a move for Mbappe, but it seems like Real Madrid are in pole position to steal a march on the Reds by landing the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner in the coming years.
Mbappe’s Rapid Rise In French Football
Mbappe has enjoyed another spectacular campaign in the Ligue 1 after putting in several match-winning displays under Tuchel’s stewardship so far. He has featured in 26 matches for PSG this term, registering 22 goals and 13 assists in all competitions. The 21-year-old has averaged 3.8 shots, 1.5 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per game for both club and country this season (stats via whoscored).
The prolific forward is already a world champion. Still, Mbappe is yet to taste success in the UEFA Champions League as PSG have failed to justify their potential in Europe’s most elite competition. Hence, a move to join the Galacticos could give him the ideal platform to go all out in securing a Champions League winner’s medal in the years to come.
Mbappe’s Incredible Attributes
Mbappe is one of the quickest attackers in European football as he has the raw pace to beat most defenders in the final third. What makes the French whizkid such a bright, young talent is his ability to score goals at the highest level consistently. He has struck up a fruitful partnership with Neymar Jr. at Parc des Princes and has also proven that he can create goals for others as well.
What Should Be Klopp’s Play Here?
Mbappe could improve his productivity even further if he joins a top club with a rich European history, so it makes sense for him to seek a move elsewhere in search of more silverware. He has already won everything that there is to win back in his homeland, so it’s high time that he made the jump to play in a foreign league.
However, the French striker comes with a massive price tag which only a club of Real Madrid’s financial pull could think about matching. Therefore, Klopp will be better off staying away from Mbappe for now. The Liverpool head coach already has some of the best attackers in European football in Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. Hence, it makes no sense for Liverpool to tamper with a Champions League winning squad that is nowhere close to being broken at the moment.
