In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live (transcripted by The Liverpool Echo) on Monday, Arsenal legend Ian Wright addressed the future of Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe and urged him to join Liverpool next summer. The Premier League pundit said (via The Liverpool Echo), “You look at Mbappe looking across the way. You can probably see him coming across here.
“I’d probably want to go to Liverpool [ahead of City] right now. Any player in the world with Liverpool, especially this season.
“This has taken like four years where [Klopp] is now so you have to say that Liverpool are at the start of it now.
“So if you’re a world-class player you probably want to get there now because it seems to me, like we saw with Pep where he’s had two years of unbelievable football, but I feel that Liverpool are really getting ready to build something special.
“If I’m Mbappe, I probably am looking at Liverpool. Where else do you want to go, if you’re Mbappe now?
“I know people say well Barcelona… I think you deal with [who he replaces in the Liverpool team] once he comes across. Liverpool fans are not going to turn their back on Mbappe are they? He’s the next big thing.
“Liverpool fans I don’t think are going to turn their back on him. It’s almost like the Real Madrid Galacticos squad when they were building.
“You think ‘Oh my gosh where’s he going to go?’ – they got them and they just got them in there. Mbappe fits anywhere man.”
Mbappe’s Outstanding Form In The Ligue 1
Mbappe has enjoyed another prolific season in the French first division following a run of impressive performances for PSG across all competitions. He has scored 22 goals and provided 13 assists in 26 matches for the Ligue 1 giants this term on all fronts. He has averaged 4.2 shots, 1.7 key passes and 2.6 dribbles per game in the top tier of France (stats via whoscored).
What Will The French Winger Bring To Anfield?
Mbappe is one of the quickest players in European football and can turn on his afterburners to beat the opposition defenders in the final third. He excels at beating his marker in a 1v1 footrace and doesn’t mind working hard by running the channels in the opposition half. The France international is an exciting, young prospect who has the potential to become a generational talent in the coming years.
Are Mbappe And Liverpool A Match Made In Football Heaven?
Furthermore, the 21-year-old is yet to hit the peak years of his playing career, so a world-class manager like Klopp could help him realise his true potential if he chooses to make the switch to Anfield someday. There is no denying that the prospect of Mbappe linking up with the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino at Merseyside is a mouth-watering one. At the same time, he will cost the European champions a lot of money considering his young age and incredible ceiling to reach for the stars.
Therefore, it is unlikely that Klopp will go in for Mbappe next summer, especially when his current squad are playing their hearts out every week in their relentless pursuit to win multiple trophies this season.
