According to the reports from Yorkshire Evening Post as cited by Leeds Live, Wolves are in the race with Leicester City to sign German centre back Robin Koch. The defender currently plies his trade in the Bundesliga for Freiburg. Promotion hopefuls Leeds United are also said to be interested in the defender, and they are supposed to be monitoring him.
Koch made his national team debut last year, and he has two appearances for Germany. The 23-year-old has caught the attention of many eyes in the past year with his impressive performances, and he has helped Freiburg occupy the 8th spot on the table so far. Koch has been with Freiburg since 2017, and his current contract expires in 2021.
Do Wolves need centre backs?
Wolves currently have three outright centre backs in their roster in Conor Coady, Willy Boly and Max Kilman. Kilman is presently on the fringes of the squad, and his contract is set to expire in the summer. Nuno Santo has utilised Romain Saiss in the back three though he is traditionally a defensive midfielder. Hence, it is understandable why the West Midlands club are after a centre back in the summer.
Koch has 70 appearances for Freiburg in the Bundesliga, and he has gained valuable experience in the last few years. However, he is far from a finished product, and one could expect him to hit another gear in a few more years.
What is Koch capable of and should Santo sign him?
The German international is a dominating defender in the air as he stands in at 6ft3. Koch is also known as a good reader of the game, and he can time his challenges well. The fact that he was called up to the German national team last year is a testament to his talent.
Koch is also capable of playing out from the back, and he is a competent defender with the ball at his feet. The 23-year-old seems to have the physicality and talent to thrive in the Premier League.
Wolves should undoubtedly continue to monitor him and look to make a move in the summer. However, with Leicester City also interested, the defender could be tempted to move there as Brendan Rodgers’ men are in a decent position to secure Champions League football. However, Wolves don’t seem to be far off in the pecking order to the Foxes, and it remains to be seen who would win the transfer battle for Koch.
