Tottenham Hotspur secured a surprise 2-0 win over Manchester City in a memorable encounter that notably saw four minutes of VAR madness just before half time.
It could be a priceless victory for Jose Mourinho’s men, who had won only one Premier League match in 2020 prior to this encounter. And the credit should be given to their entire defence as well as Steven Bergwijn.
Here are the Spurs players rated in their win over Man City.
Hugo Lloris 9
Made a brilliant save to deny Ilkay Gundogan from scoring from a controversial penalty, which originated from the aforementioned VAR decision. But before that, Lloris also denied Sergio Aguero along with a few other saves that helped Spurs preserve their clean sheet. A top display.
Serge Aurier 8.5
A sloppy tackle on Aguero led to Man City’s penalty just before the hour-mark. But, it was a blip in an otherwise excellent display from the Ivorian, who was quite effective in providing the support down the right flank.
Toby Alderweireld 8.5
Continued his excellent run of form with yet another solid defensive display, even against a top side like Manchester City. He notably made a goalline clearance early in the second half that was crucial in keeping Man City away from finding the back of the net.
Davinson Sanchez 8
Complemented the defensive contributions of Alderweireld with some diligent defending and excellent tackling. However, his build-up play needs some improvements.
Japhet Tanganga 9
Tanganga once again made a major impact as he was completely a rock at the back, even though he played as a left-back. His composure in defence is truly commendable, and the youngster is surely one to keep an eye on during the remainder of the campaign.
Giovani Lo Celso 8
In what was his first game since signing a permanent contract at Spurs, Lo Celso showcased his versatility by operating in a deeper role. His ability to read the game helped him cut out the passing lanes while his technical prowess helped Spurs retain the ball better.
Harry Winks 8
Operated alongside Winks in central midfield and provided the composure as well as the aggression that was needed. The youngster is surely improving, after a rough start under Jose Mourinho.
Son Heung-Min 7.5
Son started the game slowly, often failing to find any rhythm. But, an improved second-half display was vital as Spurs secured two goals, the last of which was scored by him, albeit through a deflection. Not his best performance, however.
Dele Alli 6.5
Not the best of games for the English international, who was completely outshone by Lo Celso and Bergwijn throughout the course of the game. He was ultimately subbed off during the final phase of the game.
Steven Bergwijn 8.5
A dream debut for the new signing, who made an immediate impact since joining from PSV Eindhoven. Indeed, it was his pace and trickery on the far side that kept Man City defenders busy.
But in the end, it was all about that sizzling strike in the 63rd minute that found it’s way into the back of the net. He was later subbed off, putting an end to an extraordinary debut.
Lucas Moura 7
Like Alli, Lucas also struggled to make his presence felt and was often cut off. However, he did tee up Bergwijn for the opener.
SUBSTITUTES
Erik Lamela 7
Provided a little more aggression in Tottenham’s first line of press after coming on during the final phase of the game.
Tanguy Ndombele 7.5
Replaced Alli in the 70th minute and added the flair and craft that was missing in the Spurs midfield. The Frenchman assisted Son for the second goal, helping his club seal the game.
Eric Dier N/A
A late replacement for the tiring Lucas.
