According to Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur were interested in the services of Eran Zahavi. The Guangzhou R&F striker was identified as a potential target in Spurs’ bid to solve their striker crisis in January. But, their late attempts to sign Zahavi failed. And in this article, we will discuss as to whether or not it would be a huge blow for the Lilywhites during the remainder of the season.
Who is Eran Zahavi?
Zahavi is an Israeli centre forward, who spent most of his career in his native country. Although he used to play for Palermo, he eventually moved to Maccabi Tel Aviv in January 2013. And after impressing in his return, Zahavi was snapped up by Chinese Super League outfit Guangzhou R&F for a fee of €7 million.
Since then, the 32-year-old has lightened up the Chinese top flight, having netted an astonishing 87 goals in just 99 matches. In the 2019 edition, the Israeli international set a record by scoring 29 goals in 28 games, which is more than 50% of the 54 goals scored by Guangzhou R&F in that corresponding campaign.
Throughout his professional career, Zahavi has netted over 300 goals, which is a statistic that speaks for itself and highlights his incredible scoring prowess.
Will Tottenham rue missing out on Zahavi?
Tottenham, in general, should feel disappointed after failing to sign a viable alternative for Harry Kane in the recently concluded January transfer window. The Lilywhites did buy Steven Bergwijn for €30 million. But, the Dutchman is not a fully-fledged forward.
Besides, the lack of a physically imposing and clever centre-forward could seriously affect Tottenham’s overall productivity in the final third as long as Kane is out injured. The addition of Zahavi, in that sense, could have made a lot of sense.
While the Isreali international is undoubtedly inexperienced in European football, his ability to score goals could have provided Jose Mourinho with at least one option in the number nine slot. Not to mention, securing the services of Zahavi could have been much more comfortable than signing some of the high-profile names Tottenham Hotspur were linked with in January.
Simply put, Zahavi was a cost-effective option in Spurs’ bid to solve their striker crisis. And failing to secure his services could potentially lead to their lack of productivity during the remainder of this campaign.
