According to a recent report by Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a late move to acquire the services of Southampton skipper Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before Friday’s transfer deadline. However, the same source has also stated that Spurs will face fierce competition from Arsenal and Everton in pursuit of the Saints midfielder.
Hojbjerg’s Impressive Form At The St. Mary’s Stadium This Season
Höjbjerg has been a regular feature in the Saints first-team this season and has put in some dogged displays in Ralph Hasenhüttl’s midfield. He has featured in 27 matches for the South-coast outfit this term and has one assist to his name across all competitions.
He has averaged 2.5 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 1.8 clearances, 1.4 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
The 24-year-old also has a lot of experience playing at the international level. He has represented the Denmark national side in 33 matches and has registered three goals for his country in the process. He has also played an instrumental role behind his side’s recent resurgence in the Premier League under Hasenhuttl’s expert tutelage.
What Will The Saints Captain Add To Mourinho’s Team?
Hojbjerg has enough pace in his locker to cover a lot of ground for his team in midfield. He is a decent dribbler with the ball in the opposition half and can link up play well with others around him. Furthermore, he excels at making tackles in midfield and can win possession back for his side.
Recruiting Hojbjerg In January: Wise Move For Mourinho?
The acquisition of a midfielder of Hojbjerg’s experience and leadership qualities will be a clever move by Spurs as they head into the second half of this campaign. Jose Mourinho needs to strengthen his midfield options after the departure of Christian Eriksen, who made a move to Inter Milan earlier this month.
Furthermore, he will add some much-needed depth to the Tottenham squad which could help the North London club compete for multiple trophies this season.
