According to Guardian, Newcastle United are on the verge of securing the services of Danny Rose. The Tottenham Hotspur left-back is expected to join the Magpies on a short-term loan deal, worth £2 million. The Tyneside outfit will have an option to make the move permanent in the summer.
Rose’s recent struggles at Tottenham
After rising to prominence under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino, Rose’s progress has been stifled by injuries in recent years. The English international notably suffered an ACL injury in 2017 that kept him out for more than eight months. It allowed his competitor Ben Davies to make a prominent play towards becoming Tottenham’s premier left-back.
And since then, Rose has found it challenging to become a regular member of the first-team, featuring in only 1,798 minutes of league football during the 2018/19 campaign. This season, he had an excellent opportunity to regain his place in the first-team, especially with Davies out injured.
But, the 29-year-old is not favoured by new manager Jose Mourinho. It even led to a reported fallout between the two individuals earlier this season, and with Rose’s contract at Tottenham expiring at the end of next season, a move away from north London could make sense.
Is Rose a viable target for Newcastle?
It has been a difficult season for Newcastle so far. While the Magpies have struggled to deliver the goals in the final third, they have also suffered various problems in defence, particularly due to injury. Even now, they have three key fullbacks in Paul Dummett, Emil Krafth and Jetro Willems out injured.
As a result, manager Steve Bruce has had to deploy Matt Ritchie at left-back. The attacker has done well for the most part, but his lack of defensive prowess has left Newcastle vulnerable at times. And that’s where Rose could be an ideal signing for the club.
The Spurs ace could add the much-needed quality in the left-back slot. He has a considerable amount of experience at the highest level of football, which will be useful as Newcastle United look to maintain their defensive solidity throughout the remainder of the ongoing campaign.
Not to mention, the arrival of Rose should allow Bruce to utilise the qualities of Willems and Ritchie in a more attacking role. This could potentially improve their overall chance creation in the final third. And for a fee of just £2 million, signing a player like Rose till the end of the season with an option to make the deal permanent is no less than a masterstroke by the Magpies.
