Manchester City’s misfortune against arch-rivals Manchester United continues as they slumped to yet another narrow defeat in the English League Cup this evening. But, despite the loss, the Citizens do advance to the final of the competition, thanks to their overall aggregate lead of 3-2.
Nemanja Matic’s first-half opener turned out to be the only difference between the two sides, although it was Man City who dominated the game throughout the ninety minutes.
Here are the Man City players rated in their disappointing defeat to Man United.
Claudio Bravo 6
The Chilean had virtually no chance of stopping Matic’s well-placed effort that led to the opener from Manchester United. Aside from that, he had very little to do.
Kyle Walker 7.5
Did well to deal with the threat of Anthony Martial. His discipline was critical in helping Man City keep United at bay. He was rather unfortunate in the second half when David de Gea saved his incredible effort from range.
Nicolas Otamendi 7
A decent defensive display by the Argentine, who stuck in and helped Man City contain the pressure from the Man United attack.
Joao Cancelo 7.5
Starting at centre-back, Cancelo’s ability to play the ball out from the back was essential in helping Manchester City initiate quick counter-attacks.
Rodri 7.5
Anchoring the midfield, Rodri’s presence in the middle third was critical as Man City dominated the majority of possession. The Spaniard attained a pass completion rate of 95%.
Ilkay Gundogan 8
Gundogan dictated the tempo with his ability to find key passes in the final third. Indeed, the German’s incredible passing range significantly boosted Man City’s overall chance creation in the final third, with the ex-Borussia Dortmund star notably providing the pass that led to Sergio Aguero’s headed effort.
Riyad Mahrez 5.5
A clumsy display from the Algerian, who lacked the temperament as well as the tenacity to make himself useful in the final third.
Kevin de Bruyne 7.5
De Bruyne’s contributions in the final third, especially in the second half, helped Manchester City push on for the equaliser. The Belgian provided a host of delicious through balls in between the defence and his link-up play with his teammates was sumptuous. But, it wasn’t enough to break the deadlock.
Bernardo Silva 8.5
Arguably the best performer of the evening, Silva made an impact with his technical prowess. The Portuguese international was by far the most active player for Manchester City and his all round qualities helped the Citizens dominate the game.
Raheem Sterling 6
A disastrous display from the England international, who lacked composure and temperament, especially when it came to converting chances. Arguably missed the biggest chance in the game.
Sergio Aguero 7.5
Aguero was a menace for the Manchester United defence throughout the game. His intelligent runs in behind the backline forced the Red Devils to defend deep. The Argentine even scored the equaliser late in the game, but it was ruled out due to offside.
SUBSTITUTES
David Silva 7
Replaced the sloppy Mahrez in the 68th minute and offered more class in midfield.
John Stones N/A
A late replacement for de Bruyne as Pep Guardiola opted to maintain his side’s lead on overall aggregate.
Gabriel Jesus N/A
Replaced the tired Aguero in the final minute of the game.
