According to a recent report by London News Online, Charlton Athletic are showing interest in securing the signature of Liverpool midfield ace Pedro Chirivella on a loan deal for the remainder of this campaign. However, the same source has also revealed that the Reds are unwilling to sanction the Spanish playmaker’s departure on loan this month.
Chirivella’s Impressive Season At Merseyside So Far
It is also worth noting that Chirivella is set to become a free agent at the end of this season when his contract at Merseyside runs out, so he will be open to joining any club of his choosing next summer (via London News Online).
However, with a crucial FA Cup fourth-round replay versus Shrewsbury Town coming up next month, Jurgen Klopp will need to rely on most of his Under-23 players to fill in when the club’s first-team players are on their winter break. Neil Critchley is set to take charge of the Reds for that match so Chirivella will likely be at the centre of his plans for this upcoming cup clash at Anfield.
The 22-year-old has already made five senior appearances for the Merseyside outfit in the cup competitions and has one assist to his name thus far. He has also featured in ten matches in the Premier League 2 this term, scoring one goal while providing one assist in the process.
The Valencia-born talent has also represented Spain at the Under-17 level but is yet to earn his first senior cap for his nation’s first-team. Unless Klopp can find a suitable replacement for Chirivella before the end of this month, it is difficult to see why Liverpool will let him leave in the midst of a critical campaign of the club’s history.
Why The Reds Need To Retain Chirivella’s Services For The Time Being
Liverpool have got nothing to lose but maybe, something to gain by keeping Chirivella at Anfield at least until the end of this campaign. He has turned out to be a valuable asset for the European champions in the domestic cup competitions this season. Klopp would hope that he can continue to flourish for the Reds in the coming weeks which would help the German tactician give some of his first-team midfielders a rest from time to time.
Should The Reds Allow The Spaniard To Leave On Loan This Month?
For now, it makes a lot of sense for the Premier League leaders to retain Chirivella’s services until the end of his contract. If the Spaniard can help the Reds do well in the remainder of this campaign, maybe they should even consider offering him a contract extension so that he can continue to grow into a top professional under Klopp’s expert tutelage at Merseyside.
