According to the latest report from Daily Star, Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths has emerged as an option for Leeds United and the Whites are ready to make an offer for the Scottish striker. Griffiths has been a prolific scorer for the Hoops, but he has endured a tough few years, and he seems to be on a decline.
It seems like the Whites are getting desperate as they are still looking for a new striker to replace Eddie Nketiah. Bielsa though indicated that the club would not seek to sign a striker if he doesn’t fit his philosophy. We believe that a move for Griffiths is unlikely to go through given his struggles this season.
Will Griffiths solve Leeds United’s problems?
The striker had taken a break of close to six months from football last season because of mental issues. The Celtic man returned this season, but he has started just two games in the Premiership for the Hoops. Odsonne Edouard continues to be the main man for Celtic.
The 29-year-old has been a prolific goal scorer for Celtic over the years as he has 109 goals and 47 assists in 223 appearances for them. On the other hand, he has been on a downward trajectory in the last one and a half year. The striker is known for his intelligent movement and link-up play, and he is a decent finisher in front of goal.
However, Leeds United should have bigger ambitions. Ideally, they should look to bring in players who would make an impact straight away. Patrick Bamford has continued to frustrate with his inability to finish off chances, and the Whites are going through a wretched run of form since the last few weeks.
Tyler Roberts has also been injured for most parts this season and the club doesn’t have any stand out striker available apart from Bamford. Bringing in Griffiths who has struggled with injuries and form in the past year wouldn’t solve any problem for the Whites.
Even though he is fit and available right now, Celtic went on to sign another striker in January in the form of Patryk Klimala. It clearly shows that even Neil Lennon is not confident that Griffiths is good enough at the moment to be a backup to Edouard.
Bielsa is unlikely to splurge and bring in a player who doesn’t fit in his system, and we believe that the recent rumour about Griffiths’ links with Leeds United is just to fill the papers.
