Premier League giants Manchester United suffered their eighth league defeat of the season as they fell to Burnley at Old Trafford by a 2-0 scoreline. Although the Red Devils started the game off strongly, they allowed Burnley opportunities to counter, and soon enough, the Clarets took one of their chances. Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez scored either side of half-time, and the toothless United attack had no response to the stubborn and structured Burnley defending.
Here are the Manchester United players rated in their loss to Burnley.
David De Gea – 5
The Clarets were only able to squeeze out two shots on target in the entire game, and De Gea couldn’t have done too much about either of those strikes. Collected the ball well from set-pieces though.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7
The full-back moved the ball extremely well down the right flank and tried everything in his arsenal to try and create something for United. Worked hard in defence as well.
Phil Jones – 5
He was responsible for unnecessarily giving away the free-kick that Sean Dyche’s men scored from. Didn’t make too many mistakes at the back and did a half decent job.
Harry Maguire – 4
The former Leicester City man had a night to forget as he was caught out for both the Burnley goals. Needs to improve his positioning as well as decision making while defending.
Brandon Williams – 5
Like his full-back partner, the youngster tried his best to spark a United goal but slowly fizzled out of the game. Was substituted in the second half in place of Luke Shaw.
Fred – 6
Played some neat passes in the middle of the park and made sure that the ball kept moving. Tried to work the Burnley lines but wasn’t helped out too much by any of the United attackers on the night.
Nemanja Matic – 5
The former Chelsea man couldn’t influence the tie quite as much as he would’ve liked, especially in an attacking sense. Just seems to be lacking some sharpness in his forward passing.
Andreas Pereira – 5.5
The youngster started the game off on a strong note, but couldn’t deliver anything of quality in the final third. Tried an audacious flick which didn’t come off, and didn’t do too much else wrong.
Juan Mata – 5
Should’ve put United up in the first half before Chris Wood had even scored. Came close with a free-kick but gave the ball away on too many occasions. Made some neat passes in midfield though.
Daniel James – 4.5
The youngster continues to show subdued signs of quality but clearly lacks the finesse and technicality to excel in the Premier League. Needs to work on his crossing from wide as well.
Anthony Martial – 4
The Frenchman, who was supposed to be United’s talisman for the tie, failed to offer anything meaningful going forward and looked like a player who was playing his first ever game in England.
Substitutes
Mason Greenwood – 5.5
The prodigious teenager needs to start more fixtures for United, especially with Marcus Rashford out for an extended period. Looks like their likeliest source of goals at the moment.
Luke Shaw – 5.5
The full-back came on and tried to add a little bit of energy on his flank, and delivered some neat crosses into the box as well. Tried extremely hard to push United forward late on.
Jesse Lingard – 2
The Englishman spent a little over 20 minutes on the pitch and was completely invisible for most of that time. Doesn’t look like he’s going to improve and should be dropped from the side immediately.
