According to the reports from Marca journalist Chris Winterburn, Sporting CP are set to sign Slovan Bratislava’s striker Andraz Sporar. The reporter also adds that Celtic offered him a chance to move to Parkhead, but the Slovenian forward rejected that opportunity.
Celtic were linked heavily with Sporar in the first few weeks of January, and now it seems like the Hoops are no more in the race for him with Portuguese heavyweights Sporting CP taking the lead. Lennon had also indicated earlier that the club was in talks with him.
The 25-year-old has been in terrific form this season, and he has already bagged 20 goals this campaign. Sporar caught the eye with his performances in the Europa League as he managed five goals and two assists in six group games. Slovan Bratislava failed to make it to the next round, but Sporar’s performances were applauded.
Why might Sporar have been a better option?
It was always clear that Celtic were going to target a striker in this transfer window. They have completed the signing of Patryk Klimala, so the Hoops have managed to bring in cover for Odsonne Edouard. However, Sporar would have been a much better option as he is experienced and proven at the top level.

Celtic have invested in young and upcoming players off late, but not all of them have managed to hit the ground running. The club had also brought in a relatively unknown striker last January in the form of Vakoun Issouf Bayo. Bayo has failed to establish himself at Parkhead, and there are talks that he could move away on loan. Klimala is also likely to take his time to hit the ground running. However, he is seen as a significant talent.
Sporar is known for his top-notch finishing skills and impressive pace. The Slovenian is also a hard worker off the ball. He likes to make runs between the channels and with Celtic filled with impressive playmakers, he would have thrived at Parkhead.
Nevertheless, there is no point in reminiscing about a player who didn’t want to come to Celtic. If the player wasn’t going to play with full desire and commitment for the club, then Celtic did the right thing by going after another striker. Hopefully, Klimala would be able to deputise well for Odsonne Edouard, and maybe in a few seasons, the Polish might become a household name in world football if he impresses for Celtic.
