According to a recent report by Bild, Red Bull Leipzig forward Timo Werner wants to play in the Premier League and prefers to move to Liverpool despite Chelsea also showing interest in acquiring his services. The same source has also revealed that the German international’s current contract with Leipzig will run out in the summer of 2023, but it also includes an initial release clause of €60m which should decrease with each year.
Werner’s Spectacular Form At The Red Bull Arena
If the reports are accurate about the Bundesliga sensation preferring a move to Merseyside, then it will be a massive boost for Jurgen Klopp’s chances of landing the in-demand striker.
Werner has played some of the best football of his career in the German top-flight this season, and his incredible goal-scoring contributions have helped Julian Nagelsmann’s side build a four-point lead at the top of the league table.
The 23-year-old has registered 25 goals and ten assists in 26 matches for Leipzig this term in all competitions. He has averaged 4.3 shots, 1.7 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga so far (stats via whoscored). The Stuttgart-born marksman has also earned 29 senior caps for the German national side while scoring 11 goals for his country in the process.
What Are The German Forward’s Best Attributes?
Werner is one of the quickest strikers in European football, and his blistering pace helps him get in through on goal time and time again which explains why he has scored so many goals for Leipzig over the past few years. He is a ruthless finisher in the final third and excels at scoring all types of goals. The German star is also highly versatile and can operate anywhere across the frontline which makes him a perfect fit for Klopp’s squad at Liverpool.
Should The European Champions Move In For Werner?
There is an argument to be made over the Reds’ overreliance on the front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane over the past couple of seasons. Hence, Klopp can benefit from recruiting a prolific goal-getter like Werner as he is already good enough to compete for a first-team place at Anfield. He will also add more depth to the Liverpool squad which is always a positive considering the Merseyside club’s desire to compete for multiple trophies every season.
Therefore, it is a no-brainer for Liverpool to work on a potential move to bring Werner to the Premier League at the end of this campaign.
