Runaway league leaders Liverpool picked up their 21st league win of the campaign after dispatching Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side by a 2-0 scoreline on the night. The Reds were the dominant force in the fixture right from the opening knockings, and it’s quite surprising that Jurgen Klopp’s team were only able to find the two goals. The Manchester United attackers had a flurry of opportunities to find the net. Still, some solid defending from the European champions was enough to keep the Red Devils at bay for the ninety minutes.
Here are the Manchester United players rated in their loss to Liverpool.
David De Gea – 6
Fortunate not to have conceded more than twice against a dominant Liverpool side. Made himself big under challenging situations and pulled off a couple of good saves off Mane and Henderson as well.
Victor Lindelof – 5
The centre-half had an extremely tough outing against a merciless Liverpool attack. Should’ve cleared the ball on the lead up to the disallowed Liverpool goal and was caught out of position at times.
Harry Maguire – 5
The Englishman’s first game as captain of Manchester United didn’t go to plan. He was given a tough time by Firmino and was responsible for marking Van Dijk ahead of the first goal.
Luke Shaw – 5
The full-back was played out of position at centre-half and didn’t show anything to prove that Ole was right to deploy him there. Was solid at times, but is unlikely to play in the position again.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 4.5
Unquestionably the youngster’s worst ever display in a United shirt; the former Crystal Palace man had a horrible second half. Was unable to keep up with the pace that Liverpool were operating at.
Fred – 7
The midfielder worked extremely hard in the middle of the pitch and tried every trick in the book to get United back in the game. Played some decent passes and kept the ball moving as well.
Nemanja Matic – 6
The former Chelsea star had an essential job in the middle of the park, and he filled Scott McTominay’s shoes pretty effectively. Needs to be quicker while releasing the ball forward though.
Brandon Williams – 7.5
The youngster was United’s best player on the night and was extremely unfortunate to have been substituted as well. Showed fantastic desire and passion and looked like a real prospect.
Andreas Pereira – 4.5
The attacker was far from his best today as he was responsible for breaking down most of the United attacks. Looked sloppy in possession and played many loose passes in the middle of the park.
Dan James – 3
The youngster had a night to forget against Liverpool, as saying that he was a spectator would be a massive understatement. Did next to nothing and wasted a great chance to set up Martial.
Anthony Martial – 5
The Frenchman had a glorious chance to equalise in the second half but sent his shot horribly high and wide. Tried to make things happen but wasn’t helped out too much by his teammates.
Substitutes
Juan Mata – 4
The Spaniard, who had an excellent game in midfield last time out, didn’t look anything like the same player, and gave the ball away on multiple occasions.
Mason Greenwood – 5
The youngster attempted to inject a bit of energy and tempo into United’s play but wasn’t able to get the rest of the team up to his pace.
Diogo Dalot – NA
Didn’t have time to make an impact.
