According to a recent report by The Guardian, Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are said to be eyeing up a possible move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Uruguayan international striker Edinson Cavani, in the light of the unfortunate injury to Harry Kane. The report claims that Jose Mourinho’s former club Manchester United are also in the market for a striker, and are said to have looked at the possibility of signing the attacker too.
It has been further suggested that the Parisians are demanding somewhere in the region of £30m for the Uruguayan’s services, even though his contract at the club is set to expire next summer. Even though the price does seem rather exuberant for a 32-year-old on paper, there’s no denying that Cavani is still one of the best strikers in the world on his day. The Premier League could be just the challenge he needs to reinvigorate his former goalscoring form.
What Would Cavani Bring To The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?
The veteran striker has been around the European game for a long time now and has played in some crucial games along the way. The sheer amount of experience he would add to any team is priceless, and that’s sure to be one of the attractions for Mourinho at this point. Despite being 32, the former Napoli man still has his wits about him and isn’t a slouch to any extent of the imagination. He tends to be a deadly finisher in the final third and isn’t afraid to go into any challenge either.
The Uruguayan international has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe for years now, and that can be seen from his goal-scoring record. Having made just under 550 first-team appearances, the striker has notched up an impeccable 339 goals. Furthermore, his record at Napoli was the stuff of legend. In 138 fixtures for the Serie A club, the veteran attacker scored 104 times and picked up 14 assists, effectively averaging a goal every game.
Why Tottenham Must Move For Edinson Cavani In January
The injury to Harry Kane has come as devastating news to everyone associated to Tottenham Hotspur, and their inability to properly replace him could cost Jose European football at the end of the season if he’s not careful. Bringing in a player of Edinson Cavani’s stature is a surefire way to fix any goalscoring problem, and considering that it’s surely just a short-term one, he does seem like the perfect option.
Then again though, £30m is a lot of money for a 32-year-old, and whether Jose wants to spend that kind of money is a different question altogether. Cavani has played just nine times in the league for PSG this season and continues to be in the shadows of Mauro Icardi, who is on loan from Inter Milan. The Uruguayan could be looking for an escape chute out of the Parc De Princes, and Jose Mourinho will do well to offer him just that in North London at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
