According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Bayern Munich will not sell Jerome Boateng this month. The German champions are worried about the small size of their current squad. And this could serve as a massive blow for Arsenal, who were linked with a move for the defender earlier this month. But, in this article, we will also discuss why missing out on Boateng could also be a blessing in disguise for the Gunners.
Boateng is in decline
One of the key reasons why Bayern have appeared reluctant on using Boateng on a regular basis is the fact that the defender has been on a decline since the start of the 2018/19 campaign. He has struggled with a myriad of fitness problems, and his decline was evident when he was playing alongside Mats Hummels, who always looked the better of the two defenders.
Boateng has also lacked the pace and mobility – making it difficult for him to keep up with his markers. It also caused him trouble when dealing with the high press, with the opposition often closing him out.
Moreover, the German international has lacked the accuracy in his passes within the past couple of seasons. And it has clearly taken a toll on his overall performances. Therefore, it might be a good idea for Arsenal to steer clear of Boateng.
He does not fit Arteta’s plans
Age is definitely a factor behind Boateng’s downfall in recent years. The Bayern Munich star turned 31 earlier this season, and he is slowly nearing the final phase of his career. Hence, he won’t be able to provide any prospect for the future for Arsenal – making him a risky acquisition.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has done well to create a new identity to the side. But, if he is to rebuild his team, the addition of young, talented players could be necessary. And with that in mind, bringing in the ageing Boateng does not make a lot of sense.
The Gunners should instead pursue players like Merih Demiral or Nathan Ake, who can not only improve the defence but can also be considered as a long-term option.
He could be an expensive signing
Boateng’s current contract at Bayern expires at the end of next season. That means he could be available for a relatively lower price, especially when compared to other quality defenders in the market.
But, at the same time, given his pedigree at the highest stage of football, Boateng is undoubtedly going to demand a lot in terms of wages. And with players like Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang already squeezing up a lot of wages, signing Boateng might not be healthy for Arsenal’s financial structure, especially following their spending spree in the summer.
