According to the reports from the Star, Celtic are chasing the signature of Sheffield Wednesday’s custodian Cameron Dawson. Along with the Hoops, Rangers are also said to be in the mix. English Championship clubs like Derby County and Blackburn Rovers are also interested.
Dawson is in the final few months of his contract with the Yorkshire club, and he could be available on a free transfer in the summer. However, the 24-year-old recently revealed that he is in talks with the club over a new contract.
Dawson talks about his contract and love for the Owls
The goalkeeper recently said, ‘’ We are in dialogue with the club about it (contract) now. I want a quick resolution as much as anyone does. I like things done. I don’t like it when things drag on. Hopefully, we will get things done, and we can quickly move forward.”
Dawson has been able to win over manager Garry Monk after he as being ignored initially under him. The English ace has been in impressive form in the last few games. Dawson also went on to indicate that he would love to stay with Sheffield Wednesday.
The custodian is Sheffield born and has come up from the club’s academy so it is understandable why he would have an emotional attachment to the Yorkshire outfit. Dawson added further and said, “I love this place. It means an awful lot to me. If there is a chance to stay here, then excellent.”
With Sheffield Wednesday in talks over a contract and the player’s love for the club, it seems to us that both the parties would come to an agreement soon. Nevertheless, the lure of playing in Europe and winning titles can attract the goalkeeper, and Celtic can try their luck with Dawson.
Does Celtic need a goalkeeper?
The Bhoys are not in desperate need of a goalkeeper this month as they have three good options in Fraser Forster, Scott Bain and Craig Gordon. However, Gordon’s contract is set to expire soon and Forster in only on a loan spell. Hence, Celtic will need to add a goalkeeper in the summer.
Given Forster’s performance so far, we believe that Celtic would try to sign him permanently, but there is no guarantee that they would be able to get him given his price tag and wages. Dawson can be a smart alternative who can be signed on a free transfer in the summer, but as things stand, even he might be out of Celtic’s grasps if he agrees on a new contract with Wednesday.
