According to a recent report by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are planning to acquire the signature of Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente on a loan deal before the end of this month. The same source has also stated that the Red Devils scouts have identified the Spanish anchorman as an ideal loan option for this winter transfer period.
Llorente’s Frustrations At The Spanish Capital This Season
The 24-year-old has assumed the role of a squad player under Diego Simeone’s stewardship this season and has only earned 368 playing minutes for the La Liga giants thus far. The Atletico midfield ace has featured in just 15 matches but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for this campaign.
Llorente has averaged 0.7 tackles, 0.4 interceptions and 0.2 clearances per game in the Spanish top-flight. However, he boasts a pass success percentage of 81.9 in league football which goes to highlight his strengths as a playmaker (stats via whoscored).
The Madrid-born player has also represented Spain at various youth levels but is yet to earn his first senior cap for his nation.
What Will The Spaniard Bring To The Theatre Of Dreams?
Llorente lacks pace but is a strong physical presence in midfield and can make some crucial interceptions for his side. He can read the danger quickly, which allows him to pull off a few vital clearances for his team. However, the Spanish prospect has struggled to find consistency at Madrid this season which is why a temporary move to Old Trafford could be a welcome one for him at this stage of his career.
Is Llorente A Decent Option For Man United?
The Red Devils are in dire need of midfield reinforcements in January as both Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are currently unavailable for selection due to injury. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could benefit from acquiring a promising young talent, even if it is on a loan deal, as it will be a cost-effective way of dealing with his current injury problems at Manchester.
As long as Llorente can get enough game time in English football, he has the potential to develop into a classy midfielder. Hence, he could prove to be a useful option for Solskjaer and might help them compete for a top 4 place in the Premier League over the next few months.
