According to a recent report by The Daily Express, former Everton and Manchester City star Joleon Lescott has urged Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur to make a January move for the signature of Chelsea’s French World Cup winning striker Olivier Giroud.
The Premier League legend spoke about how Spurs desperately need a striker to replace the injured Harry Kane and went on to say that signing Giroud from Chelsea would be a smart piece of business.
With Kane not expected back at least until the start of April, the need for an out and out striker is at its highest right now. Although the Frenchman has been linked with a move to Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan in recent weeks as well, Lescott reckons that the situation at Tottenham would suit the veteran striker’s talents. With the 33-year-old keen to make Didier Deschamps’ squad for the Euro 2020, it would be smart on his part to make a move where he is guaranteed first-team football.
What Is Olivier Giroud’s Current Footballing Situation?
The Frenchman had an excellent finish to last season, as he went on to score a goal in the final of the Europa League against Arsenal in Baku. Since the start of this new campaign though, his situation has taken a turn for the worse. For all the good that Frank Lampard’s managerial takeover has done for Chelsea, it has to be said that Olivier Giroud was one of the casualties of the former midfielder’s more dynamic tactics.
The 33-year-old just doesn’t have the pace or the right level of movement to be able to gel with the rest of the Chelsea system, especially considering that the Blues now play a very different brand of football when compared to the last term. He’s featured just five times in the league all campaign and is yet to open his account this season as well. With the attacker hoping to stay in the French national team for the Euros as well, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him move on from Stamford Bridge this season.
Why Chelsea Must Look To Get This Deal Done?
Since Jose Mourinho displaced Mauricio Pochettino as the Tottenham Hotspur manager, the mood around the North-London club has certainly improved. With that said though, the injury picked up by Harry Kane has unquestionably come as a gutting blow to Spurs and their plans for the new year. A replacement striker is undoubtedly the need of the hour at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Chelsea should be prepared to offer them just that in the form of Giroud.
The Blues have used the Frenchman’s talents very sparingly this season, and have preferred to deploy either Tammy Abraham or Michy Batshuayi in the striker’s role instead. With the report suggesting that the striker is close to an agreement with Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan, Spurs will have to be quick if they hope to acquire his services. It would indeed be a smart piece of business by the Blues to offload their man, while making one of their fiercest rivals pay for his services mid-season would make the deal even sweeter.
