According to Mirror, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has identified Hakan Calhanoglu as his latest target. He believes that the AC Milan playmaker could be a viable signing, especially with the Italian outfit keen on offloading him. It is believed that Arsenal are ready to sign Calhanoglu on loan, with the player keen on securing regular game-time.
Is Calhanoglu indeed a viable target for Arsenal?
Calhanoglu is widely regarded as one of the most gifted set-piece takers in world football. He has made quite an impact with his ability to create chances from dead-ball situations and provide a creative essence in the final third. His addition to Arsenal could be an interesting one given the fact that the Gunners do have enough firepower in their creative department.
That being said, Calhanoglu could serve as a replacement for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is currently loaned out to AS Roma. His tenacity and dynamism could provide Arteta with an additional bite in the final third. But more importantly, Calhanoglu has significant experience at the highest level of football, having made over 100 competitive appearances during his time at Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan.
Furthermore, the Turkish international is known for his versatility. Although a left-winger by trade, he can operate as a number ten and even as a number eight, meaning he can be utilised as an alternative for Mesut Ozil. And should the Gunners decide to offload Ozil due to his stupendous wages, Calhanoglu will provide them with a direct replacement option.
Why Arsenal must be careful
While Calhanoglu may seem like a viable target for Arsenal, but, it is fair to point out that the playmaker has certain weaknesses in his games. He is sometimes complacent when it comes to initiating a counter-attack. His decision making in the final third is also questionable, at times.
Moreover, Calhanoglu is not the fastest player in the world. So, in fairness, he won’t necessarily be an upgrade over Mkhitaryan, who is blessed with similar characteristics as far as the style of play is concerned.
And with players like Ozil, Reiss Nelson and Nicolas Pepe making quite an impact under Mikel Arteta, it would perhaps be fair for Arsenal to tread carefully in the market. Instead of investing in Calhanoglu, the Gunners could certainly splash the cash on a top-class defender, who can compete with the likes of Sokratis and David Luiz, potentially putting an end to their defensive woes.
