According to a recent report by Goal.com, Liverpool are interested in acquiring the services of Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos in the summer. The same source has also stated that the Reds will face stiff competition from Real Madrid in pursuit of the Brazilian defensive ace, who has a £64m release clause.
Carlos’ Majestic Spell At The Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium
The South American sensation has enjoyed a brilliant season in the La Liga after joining Sevilla from FC Nantes last summer. He has managed to put in some solid defensive displays under Julen Lopetegui’s tutelage during this campaign.
Carlos has featured in 21 matches for the Spanish outfit this term, scoring two goals across all competitions. More importantly, he has averaged 1.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 4.8 clearances per game in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
However, the 26-year-old is yet to experience football at the international level, which is a shame considering the excellent form he has shown in the colours of Sevilla this season. Therefore, the jury is still out on whether he will able to prove his worth at the highest level.
What Will The Brazilian Defender Bring To Merseyside?
Carlos has decent pace under his belt and is comfortable at playing the ball out from the back. He is also a reliable defender inside his own half as he can make some crucial interceptions and vital last-ditch clearances for his team. His playing style will suit Jurgen Klopp’s brand of football at Merseyside as Carlos is an ideal modern-day centre-half. The Brazilian talent is also good in the air as he has a strong upper body frame which helps him win aerial duels more often than not.
Carlos has the potential to be a perfect defensive partner for Virgil Van Dijk at Anfield as he possesses similar traits to the Dutch colossus. With Dejan Lovren about to head into the twilight years of his playing career, Liverpool can benefit from acquiring a quality centre-back like Carlos next summer as he could turn out to be an ideal replacement for the ageing Croatia international.
Furthermore, Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have all been injury-prone over the past couple of seasons. Hence, Klopp needs to sign Carlos as he has a proven track record of staying healthy. The defensive ace also looks like a player who can withstand the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football.
