According to Telegraaf, Tottenham Hotspur target Donny van de Beek is keen to secure a move to Real Madrid in the upcoming January transfer window. The Dutchman is willing to reject any advances from the Premier League club, which could serve as a huge blow for Jose Mourinho. The Ajax sensation is currently valued at €55 million.
Why van de Beek could be an ideal signing for Spurs
It is needless to say that Tottenham Hotspur are set to undergo a squad overhaul, especially after the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino. Especially in the creative department, the Lilywhites are set to lose Christian Eriksen. The Dane is keen to leave north London, and his current contract at the club expires at the end of the season. He is already linked with a move to Real Madrid and Manchester United.
Moreover, Giovani Lo Celso has found it challenging to settle into the Premier League after joining Spurs on a season-long loan deal in the summer. The Argentine’s future still hangs in the balance as he is yet to make an impact under Mourinho.
Hence, the Portuguese would undoubtedly welcome the arrival of someone like van de Beek. The Dutchman can be considered as a direct replacement for Eriksen. Besides, the fact that he can feature in central midfield could offer Mourinho with additional options as far as his tactical choices are concerned, giving him more freedom when rotating his squad.
Van de Beek has the flair as well as the tenacity to not only add a new dimension to the Spurs’ creative unit but also make them much more vigilant in their pressing. Indeed, the Dutchman could have built a formidable strike partnership with the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min.
What should Spurs do now?
It is unlikely Tottenham will be able to convince van de Beek into sealing a move to the Premier League. They can, however, focus on other targets available in the market.
Bruno Fernandes, for one, is an attractive option as he is enjoying another impressive start to the season at Sporting CP. The Portuguese international has already proved himself at the highest level of football and could replicate his performances in the Premier League as well.
Alternatively, Mourinho should put more faith in Lo Celso. The Argentine hasn’t had a proper chance of making his presence felt so far. He has the talent to make a difference, and the playmaker could turn out to be a decent replacement for Eriksen if he does end up making an impact during the second half of the campaign.
