Manchester United played hosts to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford earlier tonight hoping to pick up maximum points in front of their home supporters. The Red Devils were the dominant side in the early stages of the contest and took the lead via Marcus Rashford’s strike in the 6th minute. However, Spurs found a way back into the game when Dele Alli scored a wonderful solo goal just six minutes before half-time.
The Mancunian outfit kept the pressure on in the second half and got themselves ahead again courtesy of Rashford’s successful penalty. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men hung on to their narrow one-goal lead and managed to grind out a 2-1 win against Spurs.
Let’s take a look at how each Man United player performed during the contest against Spurs.
GK: David De Gea – 7/10
The Spanish goalie couldn’t do much about Alli’s sensational finish in the first half. Overall, he had a good game and did well when called into action.
RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7/10
The ex-Crystal Palace defender put in a solid shift at the back and managed to neutralise the threat of Heung-min Son completely.
CB: Victor Lindelöf – 7/10
The Swede formed a fruitful defensive partnership with Maguire at the heart of the Man United backline and did well to restrict Tottenham from scoring more than one goal during the game.
CB: Harry Maguire – 7/10
The Red Devils centre-back marked his England teammate, Harry Kane out of the game. His performance tonight will be quite pleasing for Solskjaer.
LB: Ashley Young – 6/10
The veteran full-back carelessly gave away the ball on one occasion in the second half and was fortunate not to be punished for his mistake. Otherwise, he looked assured in the left-back position.
CM: Scott McTominay – 6/10
He was physically dominant and showed a lot of grit in midfield. However, McTominay struggled to influence the game in the final third.
CM: Fred – 7/10
The Brazilian midfielder worked his socks off for the benefit of his team at the centre of the park. It was another impressive display from him tonight.
RM: Daniel James – 6/10
The youngster should have killed the contest off, but he was wasteful with his chances. However, it was another 90 minutes under his belt, which is encouraging as he will learn from the experience.
CAM: Jesse Lingard – 6/10
The English playmaker worked hard but failed to find the finishing touch in the attacking third. He needs to score or assist a few goals if he wants to keep his place in Solskjaer’s first-team.
LM: Marcus Rashford – 8/10
The English speedster opened the goal-scoring with a powerful strike from a tight angle. He went on to score the only goal of the second half when he kept his composure to convert the winning penalty.
ST: Mason Greenwood – 6/10
The Spurs keeper expertly saved his goal-bound shot. Greenwood’s performance levels faded in the second half, which is why Ole decided to replace him.
Substitutes:
CAM: Andreas Pereira – N/A
He did not have enough time to influence the game.
LB: Luke Shaw – N/A
The ex-Southampton defender came on to run the clock down for the home side.
