Reports from the Star around a month back claimed that Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson was on Rangers’ radar. Dawson is currently in the final year of his deal with the Owls, and it is not yet clear whether he will sign a new contract. Championship clubs like Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End were also said to be monitoring the goalkeeper’s situation ahead of the January transfer window.
However, Dawson recently gave a clear indication that he loves his life with the Yorkshire based football club and termed Wednesday as his team.
Dawson discusses his future
The goalkeeper recently said (The Star), ”I love the chance to walk out at Hillsborough and go away from home. I love being out there with the boys, and that’s all I am really concentrating on at the minute. This is my club. I have been a bit unfortunate in that I have never seen the good days with this club. I would love to be part of this club when we do get there [the Premier League]. I want to really be part of it when there is a positive time for this football club.”
The goalkeeper more or less pledged his future to the club, but it remains to be seen whether the Owls will give him a new contract or not. Dawson has come up from the club’s academy, and it is understandable why he has sentimental feelings attached with Wednesday.
Does Gerrard need to add a goalkeeper?
Rangers have a terrific goalkeeper in Allan McGregor who still seems to be going strong at 37. Gerrard has already indicated that he would offer the Scotsman a chance to extend his contract beyond this season. Wes Foderingham is also a decent backup option, but he too is the final year of his deal. Foderingham might leave the Ibrox in search of greener pastures and to be fair to him; he can be a first-choice goalkeeper for quite a few teams around.
McGregor’s brilliance has kept him out, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Foderingham leave. Hence, Rangers might need a new backup goalkeeper to McGregor. However, the situation isn’t pressing at the moment, and Gerrard could wait until the next summer to bring in a new option.
What now for the Rangers boss?
Dawson could be a decent backup option to McGregor. He is still 24 and could learn a lot from the veteran custodian as long as he plays. However, Dawson’s situation clearly depends on what Wednesday would like to do with him. For now, the Englishman would be better off sticking around with the English club if given the opportunity.
