According to Norwegian journalist, Jan Aage Fjortoft, Liverpool are in pole position to sign Jadon Sancho in the upcoming January transfer window. It is believed that the Borussia Dortmund winger is keen to depart the Bundesliga next month, with Anfield being his most likely destination. And in this article, we will discuss why Sancho could be a huge coup for Liverpool.
A potential replacement for Mohamed Salah?
Mohamed Salah was a subject of a lot of transfer speculation in the summer, following an excellent season that saw him help Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League. And though the Egyptian ended up staying at Anfield, it won’t be surprising if he jumps ship next summer.
The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are already hungry to sign a new attacker and Salah, in that regard, could be an excellent choice. And that’s where Sancho could come into the fray.
The England international could be considered as a like for like replacement for the ex-Roma forward. His trickery and pace on the flanks mean he can restore Liverpool’s unpredictability on the right flank, in the event of Salah’s potential departure from Anfield.
Sancho could find it easy to settle into the Premier League
What makes Sancho such an appealing target for any Premier League giant is that he is English. That means he is more likely to settle into English football seamlessly compared to other talents like Joao Felix, David Neres or even Kylian Mbappe. Besides, it would also aid Liverpool in their attempt to maintain their quota for home-grown players in the squad.
Moreover, Sancho, who is expected to appear on the right flank if he does indeed move to Liverpool, is already quite familiar with right-back Trent-Alexander Arnold. Both of them play for the England national team. So they are ought to build a good combination, which could potentially outclass the existing understanding between Alexander-Arnold and Salah on the right flank.
A proven talent
Since arriving at Dortmund in 2017, Sancho has proven himself at the highest level of football. He was notably involved in 29 goals in the Bundesliga last season, more than German superstar Marco Reus. And in a total of 57 appearances in the German top flight, the winger has scored 18 goals while providing 28 assists. These are truly exciting numbers for a 19-year-old.
Sancho is yet to make an impact in the UEFA Champions League, but that’s largely due to the futility of the Dortmund team. His performances in the England national team, for example, is indicative of his ability to perform at the highest level, making him a sensible target for Liverpool.
