Alfredo Morelos’ impressive form has been a big boost for Rangers this season as the Colombian has really managed to take his game to the next level. What would satisfy the team management and fans more is that he has also controlled his on the pitch outbursts so far, which saw him receive five red cards last season.
The Colombian already has 22 goals to his name in all competitions, and his impressive form hasn’t gone unnoticed. Premier League clubs like Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have been linked with the striker already. Some other clubs are also said to be in the frame and Gerrard and Co could have a tough time in keeping hold of their prized asset in January.
Dave King has his say on Morelos’ transfer speculations
However, the gaffer has often maintained that Morelos wouldn’t be going anywhere. Now, Rangers’ outgoing chairman Dave King also iterated the same sentiments and said that there is no chance of the striker leaving even for £40m.
King was quoted as saying (The Scottish Sun), ”I would rather keep Alfredo. If they offered £40m and the manager came to me, I’d say my instinct would be to keep him. We know he’s going to score goals. My view is not to sell him under any circumstances, and there would be no financial pressure whatsoever to sell Alfredo.”
“I think I can safely say Alfredo will not be going anywhere in January. I’ve said to the manager if you get offered £25m for him, £30m, I wouldn’t sell. You make your decision.”
What should Gerrard do?
Rangers recently posted a loss of just over £11m, and there could have been a temptation to balance the books by selling the forward. However, it seems clear that Rangers’ focus is to win the league title this season and stop Celtic’s juggernaut.
This will undoubtedly be a positive piece of news for the Bears faithful as the club hierarchy, and the manager seems to be on the same page regarding Morelos’ future. Moreover, if the striker continues with his impressive form for the rest of the season, then his market price could go up further in the summer of 2020. Hence, Gerrard should go with King’s advice and keep hold of Morelos in January.
Even with money in hand, Rangers will likely find it hard to get a replacement for Morelos in January. There wouldn’t be any guarantee that the new striker coming in would hit the ground running straight away. Hence, it makes sense to keep hold of the striker even if an exorbitant amount of money is offered. With all the crucial decision-makers insisting that Morelos isn’t going to be sold, Rangers fans can sit comfortably in the January transfer window. But what if Morelos himself starts pushing for a move away if a Premier League team comes in for him? That would be interesting.
