According to a recent report by Corriere dello Sport (via ESPN), Juventus are lining up a move to secure the signature of Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea. The same source has mentioned that Juve boss Maurizio Sarri wants to recruit the Pensioners full-back as he will provide more competition for Alex Sandro for the left-back berth at Turin.
Emerson’s Impressive Spell At Stamford Bridge
Emerson has made a bright start to this Premier League campaign after putting in a couple of decent displays for the West Londoners in recent weeks. The 25-year-old has made nine appearances for Frank Lampard’s side this term but is yet to score or assist a goal.
However, he is averaging 1.1 key passes, 1.0 dribbles, 2.3 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.0 clearances per game in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
The Italian full-back has been a good utility player for Chelsea since making a big switch from AS Roma at the start of last year. Emerson has won the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League during his time in England. Hence, Lampard would be foolish to let him go without bringing in a suitable replacement. The Santos-born talent has also earned seven international caps for the Italian national side thus far.
What Does The Italy International Bring To The Table?
Emerson is a deceptively quick full-back who can make some driving runs down the left flank using his speed and agility. He is also an above-average defender at the back but can be a bit vulnerable to making mistakes when he is not playing with confidence on the field. The Italian defensive ace can also whip in some dangerous crosses into the opposition penalty box which makes him a threat from the wide areas.
Should Lampard Cut Emerson Loose?
However, Emerson has struggled to find consistency during his time at Stamford Bridge. Maybe, the 25-year-old can take his game to the next level if he returns to play for one of the biggest clubs in his homeland. Juventus seems like an attractive destination for him, but Lampard needs to find a replacement before he can consider parting ways with the ex-Roma left-back.
The Pensioners are currently serving out their transfer ban so they would be better off holding on to Emerson at least until the end of this campaign.
