Neil Lennon had indicated (The Express) earlier that the club is working feverishly behind the scenes to bolster the squad in the January transfer window. We are expecting the Hoops to sign some attacking options. A striker is likely going to be on the agenda as Odsonne Edouard has had to play consistently in every competition. Leigh Griffiths is back available, but the jury is still out on whether he will be able to get back to his former best.
January will also give Celtic a chance to get rid of players who aren’t offering much at the moment. Some have fallen down the pecking order, and some are simply not good enough to break into the team. Here are three players, Celtic should look to part ways with in January.
Scott Sinclair
What a fall from grace it has been for a player who won Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year in 2017. The English winger has been ignored ever since Lennon took over and he has found it hard even to feature in matchday squads. The 30-year-old had managed 17 goals last season, and Celtic triggered a year-long extension in the summer.
January will give the Hoops the last chance to earn some money by selling Sinclair, and the Bhoys should look to part ways with him as he clearly isn’t in the frame of things under Neil Lennon. Given his impressive form from last season, we expect quite a few English Championship clubs to be interested in Sinclair and Celtic should be able to find a suitor for him.
Jack Hendry
The centre half was seen as an immense talent when he joined the Hoops from Dundee FC. Hendry has even represented Scotland’s national team thrice, but he has become a forgotten man now. Even during the injury crisis at the back earlier this season, Lennon went on to use Nir Bitton in defence who is a defensive midfielder by trade. The Israel international did well, and Hendry has fallen further down the pecking order.
The Scotsman is still 24, so he could certainly improve. However, he needs to play regularly for that and Celtic are unlikely to give him much game time given the talent they have at the back. Hence, Lennon should look to part ways with Hendry in January.
Eboue Kouassi
Another player who has been anonymous in the past year or so is Eboue Kouassi. The signing of the defensive midfielder was seen as a major coup in 2017, but injuries have troubled him. Even when he has been available, he seems to be nowhere in the picture to feature in the matchday squad, and the Bhoys should look to sell him in January.
