A win over Luton Town helped Leeds United climb up to second in the Championship standings. They are now two points behind the leaders West Brom but, at the same time, are cautious having squandered the promotion hopes last season in the decisive weeks. The Whites might explore the winter market to bolster the squad furthermore and are weighing up a move for Burnley outcast Matej Vydra, according to the Sun (via Daily Star).
The Czech Republic international was roped in by the Clarets last summer but fell behind Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes in the pecking order. He had a 22-goal season with Derby County before joining the Lancashire side but failed to replicate a similar show in the top flight.
Vydra only had three league starts (17 outings altogether) and found the net once (against Bournemouth) in the process, and the situation has worsened this term with him being handed only 58 minutes of Premier League football (stats via Transfermarket) over four substitute appearances.
Should Leeds United Snap Him Up In January?
The 27-year-old centre-forward might have struggled in the top flight but enjoyed successful spells with Watford and the Rams in the second tier. He has represented his nation in several youth ranks before firing in 5 goals in 26 senior appearances till date.
Leeds, meanwhile, have managed to grind out results on most occasions but failed at times due to their wastefulness in the attacking third. Patrick Bamford has been spot on of late but received stern criticism from the Elland Road faithful for an array of underwhelming outings while spearheading the Whites’ attack.
Eddie Nketiah, the Arsenal loanee, has made an impact off the bench but is not ready yet to grab a regular spot ahead of Bamford. They would require more experience in leading the line and therefore, a move for Vydra makes sense from all the aspects.
Good Move For All Parties Involved?
While the player must be longing for minutes having been instrumental at his previous clubs, Burnley too should look to get him off the wage bill to bolster the other areas. He cost them a fee in the region of £11m back in August 2018 – an astronomical amount considering the Clarets’ financial limitations. Sean Dyche would be happy to recoup a chunk of what was invested in securing Vydra’s services and Leeds, desperate to return to Premier League, must step up interest in the prolific centre-forward before their fellow contenders enter the race.
