According to the reports from the Scotsman, Celtic are said to be keeping track of Carlisle United’s youngster Jarrad Branthwaite. The 17-year-old is an upcoming centre back who is highly sought after in the English football circuit. Branthwaite has so far made six appearances in all competitions this season for the senior team, and Celtic are eying a potential January move for the teenage defender.
Branthwaite was promoted to the senior side earlier this year, and he currently has his contract at the club until 2021. League Two outfit Carlisle United have an option to extend his contract for another year. The defender didn’t make any senior appearances for his side last season, but he did manage to be on the bench for quite a few encounters. It was undoubtedly an achievement as Branthwaite turned 17 just a few months ago in June. He made his debut in the league in October.
Celtic seemingly like the qualities in the English defender. The Hoops are probably seeing him as a prospect for the future as Branthwaite still needs some refining to his game before he can thrive in a more competitive environment.
What can Branthwaite offer?
Branthwaite stands in at almost 6ft’4, and he is understandably strong and dominant in the air. The centre back has the qualities of a modern-day defender as he is decent with the ball at his feet. He can surprise with his recovery pace as he can accelerate quickly for a defender of that frame.
The English youngster already seems to have the qualities necessary to play against physical opponents. All he needs is some experience and tactical awareness to thrive at the top. Branthwaite appears to have all the raw ingredients, and if he can keep working hard, then he could be a decent defender at a higher level in a few years.
Should Lennon go for him?
Celtic have often looked to bring in young players, and that has usually paid them rich dividends in the past. It is always advisable to keep a pool of promising players coming in. Branthwaite will probably need one or two more years before he can be ready to take on the challenge for Celtic.
Lennon should definitely consider moving in for him. The Hoops can offer the youngster a much quicker path to first-team football that some other top clubs and European games attraction will also be there. It remains to be seen whether Branthwaite will trade Carlisle United for Celtic or not in the January transfer window.
