With the January transfer window approaching, Steven Gerrard could be in a bit of dilemma regarding the future of Alfredo Morelos. He has often maintained that the Colombian is unlikely to leave the club in January, but things could change if there is a concrete offer of over £20m from one of the prospective suitors.
Another worry is how Morelos would react to interest like that. The Colombian international has often maintained that playing in the Premier League is his dream.
Alan Rough on what could concern Gerrard
Former Scotland international and Celtic goalkeeper Alan Rough claims that Rangers can have a problem if they reject a substantial offer for the striker. Speaking to PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show (Via Birmingham Mail) he said, ”If that player thinks that the bid that comes in is £15m, he should be away. [He] has a temperament. He has always said ‘I want to better myself, I want to go’.
“He might think ‘this is the chance for me to go now rather than wait until the summer. Then his head could just [turn]. We saw it with Moussa Dembele [leaving Celtic], we saw it with a lot of bigger players.”
Rough is making an interesting point here as it would be interesting to see how Morelos will react if Gerrard turns down a £20m offer for him. His agent has already made the noise that prospective clubs should come in and sign him before his price skyrockets.
If Morelos starts pushing for a move away, then things could be out of control of Gerrard, and he might have to go ahead and sell him reluctantly. However, so far, even with his on-field temperamental issues, Morelos has never indicated that he would down his tools to move away from Rangers. This is not the first time when he has been linked away with a move since his arrival at Ibrox, but it has never hindered his on-field performance.
What should Gerrard do?
Gerrard would need to convince Morelos that he could leave Rangers as a legend if he stays on until summer and helps Rangers topple Celtic’s domination in Scottish football. At another Premier League club, he will just be a player in the squad, and he might have to struggle for game time initially. Hence, staying at Rangers until the summer will be win-win for all. Moreover, if Morelos fires Rangers to the title then maybe some of the heavyweights of world football might also become interested in him.
