According to a recent report by The Athletic (subscription required), Premier League giants Chelsea were extremely close to a deal for Sergio Aguero, almost two years before he actually joined Manchester City. It has been suggested in the report that although the Chelsea board were weighing up a bid, the move was vetoed in large part by the then Blues’ skipper John Terry because he was “unimpressed by the Argentine striker’s movement.”
Manchester City secured a deal for the former Atletico Madrid man in 2011, and the rest of the story is history. He’s unquestionably been one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen, and the rate at which he’s scored goals for the Citizens falls into the inhuman category. He has scored some of English football’s most memorable goals and has earned himself a place in Manchester City folklore.
What Made The Chelsea Scouts Recommend Sergio Aguero?
The former Independiente academy graduate was scouted and acquired by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006. After spending a brilliant five years in Madrid, he saw it as the right time to find a new challenge elsewhere. After snubbing Chelsea, he joined Manchester City in 2011. His time in Spain though, is what made him as a player.
Over the five years that he was at Atletico, the Spaniard played in 230 competitive fixtures and scored a whopping 100 goals. Arguably one of the greatest goalscorers of the last two decades, the Chelsea scouts weren’t wrong in identifying the Argentine, and John Terry was soon going to regret the decision to voice his opinion.
What Has Sergio Aguero Achieved In The Premier League?
The Argentine veteran is 31 now but is unquestionably still one of the deadliest strikers in world football. He has played in 353 fixtures for the Citizens and has found the back of the net an almost unbelievable 244 times. His scoring rate is matched by few people in the league’s history and the fact that he’s scored more goals against Chelsea than any other club in his career is like rubbing salt into the Blues’ wounds as well.
The striker has won the league title four times and has been a massive part of Pep Guardiola’s revolution at the Etihad Stadium. He was vital in assisting the mastermind manager in monopolising a league that most people thought could never be dominated. He’s consistently scored at least ten goals in every season that he’s played since joining City, and with nine already this term, he’s on course to achieve that this time around as well.
Why Sergio Aguero Was The Biggest Jackpot City Ever Hit
Some great players have taken to the field in a Manchester City shirt over the years – Yaya Toure, Vincent Kompany, and infamously, even Frank Lampard. But none have had the influence that the diminutive Argentine has had since joining from Spain all those years ago. He is still the first-choice striker at the Etihad, and in a world full of changing trends and styles, Sergio Aguero’s goals have been an unstoppable constant.
