With the January transfer window approaching, Rangers will have a chance to trim down their squad. We believe the Bears are unlikely to be busy in terms of incoming transfers, but they could be on the lookout for potential suitors for some of their outgoing players.
We are obviously not talking about the likes of Morelos or Kamara but players who are on the fringes of the squad. Gerrard has strengthened his team massively in the last few windows, but some players are offering nothing at the moment. The manager had also admitted in August that he would need to trim down his squad.
Here are three players Rangers should look to part ways with in January.
Eros Grezda
The Albanian international has quite easily been the biggest flop under Gerrard. He signed for £2m on a four-year deal last season. The winger struggled with fitness and injuries to begin with, and he only played in 13 games in the Premiership.
He was linked with a move away this summer, but nothing materialised. The final nail in the coffin came when Grezda was guilty of spitting during Gers’ youth side’s Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup win against Ballymena.
A fuming Gerrard later said on the incident, ”If you behave in that manner then you won’t represent this club at any level.”
New Sporting Director Ross Wilson will have a big test in finding a possible suitor and recoup as much as possible for the winger.
Matt Polster
The versatile right-back was seen as a backup option for Tavernier, but he hasn’t added much to the squad ever since his arrival. Polster has made just four appearances since his move in January this year. If he isn’t coming close to pushing Tavernier for the first-team spot, then we don’t see the need of having him around. He is already 26, so he isn’t going to be a prospect for the future. Rangers will be better off shipping him away.
Greg Docherty
The midfielder had an impressive loan spell for Shrewsbury last season, but he has again found it hard to get game time at the Ibrox. Rangers have plenty of options in the middle right now, and there is no point in keeping Docherty for the rest of the season. If Rangers get a decent deal for him, then we believe that they could look to ship him away permanently. Otherwise, a loan spell in January would be a good move.
