In a recent interview with Sky Italia (via the Daily Mail), Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric opened up about the possibility of moving to the Serie A when he said, ‘I like Italy, I follow Serie A because many of my team-mates from national team are there.
‘Italians are fantastic. Italy is close to Croatia and people have similar mentalities.
‘I like Italy, we’ll see if some day I play in Italy. I can’t talk about this because I’m a Real Madrid player, I’m enjoying my time there and for the time being I see my future in Madrid.’
Modric Faces An Uncertain Future In Spain
The Croatia international’s current contract with Los Blancos is set to expire at the end of this campaign. Therefore, his long-term future at the Spanish capital is quite uncertain. It is quite likely that he could move to Italy next summer to end his playing career close to his homeland. It feels like Modric would enjoy playing in the Serie A as he is a technically gifted footballer.
The 34-year-old has been a sporadic feature in Zidane’s first-team this season as he has missed a lot of matches due to injury. However, he has still managed to score one goal and grab three assists in nine appearances for the Galacticos this term on all fronts.
Since making a switch from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2012, Modric has gone on to play in 312 matches for Madrid, netting 18 goals while providing 50 assists across all competitions. He has also earned 126 international caps for Croatia, scoring 12 goals in the process.
What Does The Ex-Premier League Talent Offer On The Field?
On his day, Modric can still be one of the best playmakers in Europe, but father time has taken its toll on his game over the past couple of seasons. He can still unlock a rigid defence with a killer pass in the final third and also contributes by scoring the odd goal from time to time. However, the 2018 FIFA World Cup finalist is not a guaranteed starter at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium anymore.
Should Zidane Sanction Modric’s Departure?
Therefore, it might be wise for Zidane to move him on and bring in a suitable replacement next summer. The Croatia captain has won multiple trophies in Spain so he wouldn’t mind moving on in search of a new challenge before he finally decides to hang up his boots sometime in the future.
