According to Daily Mail, Arsenal are among the clubs linked with a move for Quincy Promes. The Ajax winger has opened the door over a potential switch to the Premier League after impressing in the Champions League game against Chelsea. However, the Gunners could face stiff competition from Liverpool in pursuit of the winger.
Promes’ is a well-established attacker
A product of the DCG youth academy, Promes has been one of the most consistent Dutch players over the course of four-five years. He initially made his mark at Spartak Moscow, having been involved in 99 goals in 135 competitive matches for the Russian outfit. His impressive performances in Russia helped him earn a big-money move to Sevilla last summer.
But, he endured a disastrous debut campaign in La Liga, netting only two goals in 33 matches. But, a mass exodus at Ajax saw him return to Amsterdam for a fee of €15.7 million.
Promes has had an excellent time since returning to Ajax, scoring eight goals in 12 Eredivisie matches. His contributions in the attack have helped the club retain their dominance in Dutch football. He also starred in the recent 4-4 Champions League draw with Chelsea, which suggested that the winger might be ready to perform at a higher level of football.
Do Arsenal really need Promes?
Arsenal have struggled with lack of creativity in attack, despite boasting the services of some of the most talented players in Europe. New signing Nicolas Pepe has failed to make a difference while Mesut Ozil has found it challenging to integrate himself to Unai Emery’s system.
Promes, in that regard, could revamp the Arsenal attack. His vast experience of European football coupled with his attacking traits, could help the Gunners as they look to recover from a rough start to the campaign.
But, it is fair to point out that lack of creativity is not Arsenal’s biggest issue this season. They have, instead, appeared quite vulnerable in defence. The defensive duo of Sokratis and David Luiz have both struggled in playing the ball out from the back while their marking has been horrible.
Therefore, it would perhaps be a wiser choice from Arsenal to invest in a new defender rather than Promes, especially given the fact that their youngsters have done well in attack so far. But, if they are to make a move for the Dutch international, he is more than a viable target for the north London giants.
