According to the reports from the Star, Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson is said to be on Rangers’ radar. Dawson’s current contract with the Owls run out in the summer, and it is yet not clear whether the English club would offer him a new deal. Along with Rangers, Championship clubs like Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End are closely monitoring Dawson’s situation ahead of the January transfer window.
Rangers currently have arguably the best goalkeeper in Scotland in Allan McGregor. The veteran custodian was signed in the summer of 2018 on a two-year deal, and hence his contract will expire next summer. McGregor has been outstanding for Rangers in his second stint making some big saves in goal. Manager Steven Gerrard has already indicated that McGregor could be handed a new deal as he is still going strong at the age of 37.
Why are Rangers looking for a goalkeeper?
However, Rangers could be short on backup options as well next season as Wes Foderingham, and Andy Firth are also in their final year of the contract. Foderingham was the first choice before McGregor’s arrival, and he didn’t do much wrong before that.
McGregor’s brilliance has kept him away from first-team even though Foderingham is also a decent option. If McGregor goes on to extend his stay, then we think that Foderingham would be unlikely to sign a new deal and he could move to another club in search of regular playing time.
Therefore it is understandable why Rangers might be eying a goalkeeper for the next season. Dawson meanwhile is currently the second choice goalkeeper at Wednesday behind Keiren Westwood. The 24-year-old was the first choice goalkeeper under Jos Luhukay, but ever since Garry Monk took over at the club, Dawson has fallen down the pecking order behind the more experienced Westwood.
We feel that Rangers are likely to sign him in the summer of 2020, but the Owls could look to part ways with him in January as to not lose him for a free transfer. With various English clubs also in the mix, Rangers might miss out in that case.
What can work in Gerrard’s favour in terms of beating the English clubs?
However, the lure of playing for a club like Rangers and maybe be involved in European football is something which could attract Dawson. Gerrard’s men could even make it to the Champions League by next season so Dawson might be tempted to wait until the summer. However, it remains to be seen what Sheffield would do with him in January.
