Rangers coasted against Hearts at the weekend as they registered a comfortable 3-0 win to book a place in the League Cup final. Steven Davis, who started in midfield, was once again an instrumental figure. Rangers’ last title came back in 2011 and Davis who was in his prime played at the Ibrox then. That was the season why the Gers were able to do the double of Premiership title and the League Cup. A lot has changed since then, but Davis has once again produced the goods to take Rangers to the finals in 2019 now.
Davis’ impressive second stint at Rangers
The Northern Irish midfielder initially joined in January from Southampton on a six-month loan. He started slowly, and there were some concerns that Davis might not be able to prove his worth during his second stint at Rangers. However, he soon managed to raise his game after the initial few months. That was enough for Rangers to hand him a year-long contract in the summer after the Saints released him.
This season, he has been instrumental in the quarterback role for Rangers; a position which Gerrard also played in the latter days of his career. Davis gets on the ball in deep areas and tries to dictate play. His quick passing, movement and vision make him a standout player. He is always willing to take the ball in tight areas, and it is fair to say that he is an orchestrator for the Glaswegian giants in midfield.
Davis’ contract is set to expire in the summer of 2020 as Rangers only handed him a year-long deal this summer. However, after a full pre-season behind him, he has managed to raise his game, and it is fair to say that Rangers would be looking to sign him again.
Davis on his contract situation
The midfielder recently gave an update on his contract situation. He said (Evening Times), ”We haven’t sat down and spoken about anything just yet. But I think you can see I’m enjoying my football, that’s why I’m playing the way I am and the team’s performing well too. I haven’t given it too much thought, but if those talks do happen it’ll be done quite easily, I’m sure.”
Davis currently seems relaxed about his future, and he believes that things will be sorted out quite easily. Gerrard recently went on to indicate (Daily Record) that he won’t be looking at age and it is likely that he will hand a veteran like Davis a new contract if he carries on with his excellent form. It won’t be surprising to see Davis signing a year extension by the time this season ends. Davis will be 35 in January next year, but at the moment, he is handling the vigours and the physicality of the Premiership quite effectively.
